The France head coach has hailed the shotstopper for his sensational late heroics in Monday night's encounter.

France manager Didier Deschamps has lauded goalkeeper Mike Maignan after his heroics helped France secure a 1-0 victory over the Republic of Ireland in their Euro 2024 qualifier match. The AC Milan goalkeeper made a stunning save in the 90th minute, denying Nathan Collins' header and securing France's lead after keeping out team-mate Jules Kounde's attempted clearance earlier in the game.

Despite dominating the game for long periods, France struggled to create genuine problems for the Irish defense. However, Maignan's incredible intervention ensured that Pavard's 50th-minute strike was enough to secure the win.

Maignan, who has taken over from World Cup-winning captain Hugo Lloris in the national side, has fully justified his status as France's number one goalkeeper. Against the Netherlands on Friday, the 27-year-old former Lille shot-stopper came in big once again, save a late spot-kick by Memphis Depay to go home with a clean sheet in the 4-0 win.

Following the conclusion of the encounter, Deschamps praised the goalkeeper, saying, "It was an incredible save, and we know what Mike is capable of. He has great qualities, his stature and his mentality. He is a great leader and a great player."

Deschamps also highlighted Maignan's instrumental role in the past couple of games, including his penalty save in France's previous match. The manager's faith in Maignan has been well-placed, and the goalkeeper's performances have been key in France's recent successes.

"We know what Mike is capable of," he added.

"He has incredible qualities, a great stature and mentality. He saved a penalty on Friday (in 4-0 win over The Netherlands) but the save tonight was far more significant, I've never had any doubts about him."
