On Saturday evening, Vancouver Whitecaps welcomed Colorado Rapids as the two struggling sides were both eager to pick up some much needed points.
Unfortunately, the game finished as a rather boring scoreless draw, but it still made major waves - and not because of anything really the players did.
Rather, for the first time in MLS history, fans had the chance to see a game that was officiated by an all-female team. This is the first time in nearly three decades (28 to be exact) that a MLS game has had women fill all roles when it comes to officiating, with Tori Penso, Brooke Mayo, and Felisha Mariscal tasked with keeping everything running smoothly:
Tonight's match between @WhitecapsFC and @ColoradoRapids featured on-field female referees for the first time in MLS history:

The game was mostly without any major incidents, save for late in the second half when Penso gave the Rapids a penalty, but Diego Rubio's effort from the spot was saved by Whitecaps shot-stopper Yohei Takaoka to keep the score-lines level at 0-0.
All in all, it is safe to say that there are quite a few fans who will hope that someday having an all-female officiating team becomes something that's par for the course rather than noteworthy, where seeing female refs for a men's game will be no different than having them in charge of a women's match.
