The Spanish goalkeeper committed a poor mistake to gift West Ham a win over the Red Devils on Sunday.

Manchester United's hopes of securing a top-four finish suffered a massive blow after another costly mistake by David de Gea condemned the Red Devils to a defeat against West Ham. Sunday's match-up at the London Stadium concluded with the Hammers snatching the maximum three points via a 1-0 scoreline, thanks to the Spanish goalkeepers howler.

The only goal of the game came in the first half when Said Benrahma's speculative effort from outside the box appeared to be a routine save for United's goalkeeper, De Gea. However, the Spaniard - who is reportedly in line for a new contract in the coming weeks - made a mess in his attempt to stop the ball, and allowed it to slip through his grasp and into the back of the net. Although United pushed on for an equalizer, they were inefficient in front of goal, and their poor away record emerged from the shadows to taunt them once more. Getting close to the end, things almost got out of hand for the visitors when Lindelof appeared to handle the ball in the box. However, the Video Assistant Referee opted not to award the spot-kick, much to the relief of the visitors.

With no more goals being scored, the result led the Red Devils to slump to their second league defeat in a row, leaving their hopes of securing a Champions League spot in jeopardy. The defeat, combined with Liverpool's victory over Southampton, sees Erik ten Hag's men in fourth place with just a one-point advantage over their rivals, albeit with a game in hand.

As things stand,  Manchester United have lost each of their last four Premier League matches in the month of May, failing to score a single goal in those games. The Red Devils have also lost eight away games in the competition this season, the club's joint-most away defeats in a single season in the competition, along with 2021-22 and 2015-16.

For West Ham and David Moyes, it was a memorable clash as, for the first time in 10 attempts, he has finally been able to defeat Manchester United. The points won would also be significant for the Hammers in their charge to avoid relegation and remain in the Premier League as they now sit seven points above the drop, with three games left to play.
