Barca crowned La Liga champions after Espanyol win

OFFICIAL: Barcelona crowned La Liga champions after Espanyol win

May 14, 2023 By Emmanuel K. Budu-Annor
The Blaugrana are the champions of Spain after defeating their local rivals in Sunday's derby.

Barcelona have won the La Liga title for the first time since since 2019. The Catalan giants roared to a resounding 4-1 victory over their city rivals, Espanyol, in an exciting showdown at the RCDE Stadium on Sunday evening.

In a weekend of twists and turns, Real Madrid, currently occupying the second spot in the league standings, secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory against Getafe on Saturday. On the contrary, Atletico Madrid, positioned in third place, suffered a shocking 1-0 defeat at the hands of Elche earlier on Sunday, and the results paved the way for Barcelona to clinch the title should they win at Cornella in the local derby.

As anticipated, Xavi's men cruised to a resounding victory, with a brace from Robert Lewandowski and the maiden goals for Alejandro Balde and Jules Kounde propelling them to a comprehensive win in the Catalan derby. Javi Puedo and Joselu got the consolation goals for Espanyol but that did not stop their city rivals from extending their lead over Real Madrid to 14 points with only four matches remaining in the season.

The night's result meant confirmed Barcelona as champions of Spain for the first time since 2018/19 under Ernesto Valverde, prior to the pandemic. Although it is the club's first in four years, it is also their ninth in the last 15.
