Liverpool entered Saturday's clash with Aston Villa knowing that anything but a win would all but end their top-four hopes. The Merseyside giants, who have done remarkably well to get back into the mix, needed maximum points from their final two games and slip-ups from Manchester United and Newcastle in order to qualify for the UEFA Champions League.

However, the Reds have failed to complete that first task. Klopp's men hosted Unai Emery's side at Anfield, and after a frustrating first-half performance, the hosts found themselves 1-0 down at the break. In fact, it could have been worse had Ollie Watkins not missed a penalty in the 22nd minute.

Liverpool threw everything at the opposition in search of a goal in the second half but only got the equalizer in the 89th minute, with Roberto Firmino netting off the bench in his final game at Anfield. A whopping 10 minutes of extra time was added but Salah and Co. failed to find the winner and were thus forced to settle for a draw.

This result was made worse by the other score as Manchester United secured a crucial 1-0 victory away to Bournemouth, with Casemiro netting the only goal of the game. Meanwhile, Newcastle thrashed Brighton 4-1 on Thursday, leaving both the Magpies and the Red Devils on 69 points each.

Those two teams have two games left to play while Liverpool, who are on 66 points, have only one game left before their campaign ends. This means Klopp needs one of Newcastle or Manchester United – preferably Man United due to their poor goal difference – to lose their final two games of the season if the Merseyside giants are to finish in the top four.

And with that unlikely to occur, many flocked to Twitter to troll last season's UEFA Champions League runners-up due to them being on the brink of Europa League football next term. Despite these results, Eddie Howe and Erik ten Hag will not be celebrating yet and will remain focused on completing their missions. Both teams need a mere point in their final two fixtures to secure a top-four finish. The Magpies face Leicester and Chelsea while Bruno Fernandes and Co. face Chelsea and Fulham next.
