Chelsea are in desperate need of midfielders. With the summer transfer window being right around the corner, the Premier League giants are on the hunt for a defensive midfielder, one that can play alongside Enzo Fernandez and shield Pochettino's defense.

The likes of Declan Rice and Moises Caicedo have been linked but the lack of European football, let alone UEFA Champions League football, has gravely damaged Chelsea's odds of signing those players. As a result, Boehly and Co. are exploring other options in the continent and have identified one of the most highly-rated midfielders in Europe's other big leagues.

That man is Manuel Ugarte, the 22-year-old no.6 who is racking up rave reviews at Sporting CP recently. While the Lions haven't enjoyed the best of seasons, finishing outside the Champions League spots in the Primeira Liga, the Uruguayan was one of many bright lights at the José Alvalade Stadium.

However, the Blues face stiff competition. PSG, another European powerhouse in desperate need of a defensive midfielder, are also keen on Ugarte and are ready to battle it out with Pochettino's side for the South American talent.

Fortunately for Chelsea, they have received a huge boost. According to Record Portugal, the player prefers a move to Stamford Bridge over the Parc des Princes. The London giants endured an abysmal 2022/23 campaign but the appeal of the Premier League is irresistible.

The midfielder has a €60M (roughly $64M in today's market) release clause, which both Chelsea and PSG are both ready to trigger. Pochettino, who has just been unveiled as the new head coach at Stamford Bridge, is pushing for the Uruguayan and has reportedly had a phone call with the player.

It has been suggested that the Blues are willing to offer David Datro Fofana on loan in return but Fabrizio Romano has refuted this claim. It will be interesting to see where Ugarte ends up as one lucky club will secure the services of this quick and tenacious defensive midfielder.
