The USMNT and Honduras will lockhorns in the first of two semifinals of the inaugural Concacaf Nations League Final Four.

Preview

Honduras and the USA will go head-to-head at Empower Field at Mile High Stadium on Thursday for the first of two CONCACAF Nations League semi-final matches. The two sides will be eager to put on good shows with the objective of winning at the back of their minds ahead of a prospective final outing against either Mexico or Costa Rica. The USMNT will particularly be poised to get something out of the forthcoming clash after falling short in their last outing.

Gregg Berhalter took his men over to Switzerland in preparation for the upcoming meeting but saw a five-game winning run across all competitions coming to an end. Despite putting in a good shift, the Stars and Stripes picked up a 2-1 defeat inside St Gallen. Sebastian Lletget got the consolation goal for the side with  Steven Zuber's effort proving enough for the hosts after Ricardo Rodriguez had broken the deadlock.

Real business is on the horizon and the USMNT will be eager to dust themselves and put the disappointment behind as they target a final berth in the inaugural CONCACAF Nations League. The young set-up should be able to draw inspiration from they fact that they have only recorded just two losses in the 10 games they have featured in so far across the past 20 months. Their record against Honduras could also come in handy considering the fact that their opponents have failed to pick up a single win in their last five meetings.

Historically, there have been 25 meetings between the pair. The Yanks hold a superior advantage with 16 wins to their name, drawing five and losing the remaining four matches. The last meeting between the pair was played in 2017 and ended in a 1-1 draw. However, the dynamics are different now with a keen contested being anticipated.

Fabián Coito's men qualified for the final four by finishing in first position in Group C. They rose to the summit of the table with an undefeated record, winning three games and drawing the remaining one in a group with Martinique and Trinidad and Tobago. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Los Catrachos could only feature in just two games in 2020, drawing against Belarus and losing to Greece. However, they are expected to live up to the billing against the Americans.

Team news

Both teams are expected to have a healthy squad at their disposal with the players. For the USMNT, Zack Steffen will be back in goal after being on the bench for Manchester City in the Champions League final. Similarly Christian Pulisic will assume his place in the attack after securing European cup glory with Chelsea. The two aforementioned players missed the 2-1 defeat against Switzerland in the previous outing.

Honduras, on the other hand, have no injury issues to worry about.

Predicted starting XI

  • USA: Steffen; Robinson, Brooks, McKenzie, Dest; Adams, Musah, McKennie; Pulisic, Sargent, Reyna

  • Honduras: Menjivar; Alvarado, Figueroa, Pereira, Alvarez; Quioto, Acosta, Flores, Rivas; Lozano, Elis
