Manchester City are back in action in the Premier League, with the reigning champions taking to the field on Saturday in a highly-anticipated showdown with Newcastle. This 3 p.m. ET clash will take place at the Etihad Stadium, making it the Cityzens' first home game of the campaign, as both teams go in search of a crucial victory.

Guardiola's men enter this clash on the back of their lovely UEFA Super Cup win but the hosts appear to be disadvantaged for this game. Haaland and Co. overcame UEFA Europa League champions Sevilla on Wednesday via penalties but that victory was not without cost.

The game was physically taxing and with Guardiola's men returning to action roughly 72 hours later, the Manchester City players might not have enough time to recover, let alone to go toe-to-toe with Newcastle, arguably the most aggressive team in the Premier League.

Furthermore, the hosts are dealing with a handful of injury concerns, the main one being Kevin de Bruyne, with the Belgian sensation ruled out for some time due to a serious hamstring injury. This led to Pep calling out the Premier League, with the manager sarcastically thanking the English top flight for handing his players little to no time to sufficiently recover.

However, the Cityzens are still one of the most talented teams in the world. Phil Foden will likely get more minutes on the pitch and the Englishman and the unstoppable Erling Haaland have shown they can tear teams apart.

The treble winners did just that in the opening game, as a brace from the aforementioned Norwegian ace secured the defending champions a 3-0 win over Burnley. Oddly enough, City were somewhat shaky in the first half of that Turf Moor visit yet scored twice in the first 36 minutes.

However, can the Magpies stop the title holders? Newcastle enter this clash with tremendous confidence, having thrashed Aston Villa in their opening game of the season, and will be looking to maintain this form against the hosts.

Howe's men welcomed Unai Emery's side to St. James' Park and despite all the excitement surrounding Aston Villa this campaign, the Magpies tore them to pieces, winning 5-1 thanks to a brace from Alexander Isak and debut goals from Harvey Barnes and Sandro Tonali.

This result has fans and pundits excited for their 2023-24 season, with many predicting great things from the Saudi-owned club. However, they must make amends for last season's performance at the Etihad Stadium where they lost 2-0 despite having several opportunities to score.

Victory over Manchester City this early on in this season will not define the title race. However, a win over the title favorites will give the visitors the confidence they need to push on and compete for the crown.

Man City: As mentioned earlier, De Bruyne has suffered a hamstring injury and will miss three to four months after undergoing surgery. Furthermore, both John Stones and Ruben Dias are doubts for this clash. Likewise, Bernardo Silva is set to miss this game as well.

Newcastle: Emil Krafth, Joe Willock, and Javier Manquillo are all sidelined but those are the visitors' only concerns. Furthermore, Lewis Hull will miss this game as his move from Chelsea was not completed in time.
