The North London club have finally replaced Jose Mourinho.

Tottenham Hotspur have appointed Nuno Espirito Santo as their new manager, the club confirmed on Wednesday evening. The Portuguese manager joins the North London club on a contract until 2023, replacing interim boss Ryan Mason who took over the club following the departure of Jose Mourinho.

The latter, who had an underwhelming start to the 2020/2021 season, was shown the exit door in April. In his absence, Tottenham's 29-year-old caretaker only managed a seventh-place finish, failing to qualify for the  UEFA Champions League and the Europa League. They will however make an appearance in the maiden Europa Conference League.

Following the conclusion of the season, Tottenham have been in the market for a new manager. Antonio Conte was named among the prospective candidates to take over the club but the former Inter Milan boss declined the offer as he was not interested in the project proposed to him by chairman of the club Daniel Levy. Ex-Napoli boss Genarro Gattuso and former AS Roma manager Paulo Fonseca were all approached by Spurs but an agreement could not be reached.

"We are delighted to announce the appointment of Nuno Espírito Santo as our new Head Coach on a contract until 2023," the statement released by Tottenham read.

"Nuno arrives following a four-year spell at Wolverhampton Wanderers, where he guided the club from the Championship into the Premier League and secured consecutive seventh place finishes in their first two seasons back in the top flight – their highest league position since 1980. He also restored the Molineux outfit to European competition, leading them to the quarter-finals of the UEFA Europa League in 2019/20."

Club chairman Daniel Levy also expressed his appreciation to Spurs fans for their patience while they searched for the ideal manager. He said: "We would like to thank our supporters for all their patience throughout this process," said Levy.

"I've spoken already about the need to revert back to our core DNA of playing attacking, entertaining football, and [managing director of football] Fabio [Paratici] and I believe Nuno is the man who can take our talented group of players, embrace our young players coming through and build something special."

Speaking on his appointment, Nuno said: "When you have a squad with quality and talent, we want to make the fans proud and enjoy. It's an enormous pleasure and honour (to be here), there's joy and I'm happy and looking forward to starting work. We don't have any days to lose and we must start working immediately as pre-season starts in a few days."
