This proposed initiative could see a very interesting match-up starring the champions of Europe versus the champions of South America.

This past weekend was a great one for football fans. On Saturday, they were treated to the Copa America final starring Lionel Messi and Argentina against Neymar and Brazil, with Argentina ending their nearly 30 year wait for a title thanks to Angel Di Maria's goal. Then, less than 24 hours later, it was onto the UEFA Euro 2020 finals, featuring England, who were hoping to end their 55-year long wait for a major title and Italy, who were looking to win their first Euro title since 1968. After 120 minutes and a grueling penalty shoot-out, Roberto Mancini and the Azzurri came out on top, 3-2 on spot-kicks.

But could we see a very interesting inter-continental clash with Italy and Argentina on the horizon? Perhaps. And we're not talking about the World Cup, either. According to The Times, UEFA president Aleksander Čeferin thinks that this certainly is a reality and not just a pipe dream.

And according to Čeferin,UEFA and CONMEBOL, South American's football governing body, would be able to work out the details without FIFA getting involved.

"[UEFA and CONMEBOL] absolutely don't need any FIFA permission. Why would we need permission for a competition? This is a decision for the two confederations. Because we are not members of FIFA, we are independent," he noted in an interview with the British publication.

The only question is when this proposed match would take place. With the UEFA EURO 2020 tournament pushed back to this year due to COVID-19, there's less than two years between this year's competition and the upcoming World Cup. So far, reports have claimed that the match will take place next year - but it will be interesting to see how they'll be able to squeeze that in among club and international football.
