Barcelona have claimed the 2011/12 Copa del Rey title. They beat Athletic Bilbao 3-0.
Pedro Rodriguez kicked off the party with a goal inside the second minute of the match. Lionel Messi doubled Barcelona’s lead after 20 minutes with an unstoppable right-footed shot from a tight angle.
Andres Iniesta made the killer pass leading to that goal. Pedro finished off Athletic Bilbao in the 25th minute with a low shot. Bilbao were left to chase the Catalans all over the pitch.
Xavi and Iniesta ensured Muniain had a miserable night despite all his efforts to put Athletic Bilbao in control of the game. Mascherano and Pique were like bricks in defence, leaving Fernando Llorente helpless in attack.
Pep Guardiola can now leave Barcelona with his head held high. The 2012 Copa del Rey title is his 14th and last in a spell of 4 years at the head of Barca’s coaching staff.
For Athletic Bilbao, the 2011/12 season might taste bittersweet. Reaching the final of the UEFA Europa League and the Copa del Rey is a great achievement but losing 3-0 against Atletico Madrid and now Barcelona definitely hurts.
It will be up to Bilbao coach Marcelo Bielsa to revive the momentum among his dejected players.
