Le Classique may not have had the result fans had hoped for, but there was plenty of fireworks taking place off the pitch.

This past Sunday was a real treat for football fans around the world, as there were plenty of huge derby clashes taking place in an action-packed day of action.

One of these huge games, of course, was Le Classique - the highly anticipated tussle featuring bitter rivals PSG and Olympique Marseille. And because of Lionel Messi's surprise move from Barcelona to Les Parisiens earlier this summer, there were many more people tuning in to see how the six-time Ballon d'Or winner would fare in his first major derby clash outside Spain.

Unfortunately, they were left sorely disappointed as not only did Messi fail to score, but so did the rest of the PSG squad. And Marseille fans were also left feeling frustrated as neither leading man Dimitri Payet nor his colleagues were able to find the back of the net, either. All in all, it finished as a scoreless draw - but there was still plenty of rumblings taking place both on and off the pitch.

PSG ended up finishing the game a man short after new signing Achraf Hakimi was sent off for a bad foul, and there were a couple of goals that were cancelled out by VAR.

But that pales in comparison to the ruckus Marseille fans caused both in and outside the Stade Velodrome. According to reports, over 20 fans were arrested for fighting, and at least nine police officers were injured while trying to contain the crowd. 

Observers saw Messi actually being chased by a fan during the match, while PSG players, namely star man Neymar who took corner kicks had to be protected by armed security due to some sections of the Marseille fanbase throwing projectiles at them on the pitch!

As a result of this chaos, it's been claimed that Jorge Sampaoli - who himself received a card for unsporting conduct - and his team could be punished, with a potential points deduction. Marseille currently find themselves in fourth spot, within touching distance of Nice and Lens, so naturally, their fans will hope that the governing bodies will go a bit easy on them and not hit them with too stiff a penalty.
