Seven Premier League teams and one League One side will go all in for a spot in the semis in one of their last games of the year.

The Quarter-final stage of the League Cup is set to begin on Tuesday with four games that will be a roller-coaster of emotions for the fans of all trams involved.

The competition has seen some heavyweight contenders, such as Manchester City or Manchester United, leaving the tournament in the earlier stages, which means that the throne has been vacated by the Cityzens, and a new champion will rise in this edition of the cup.

There are seven top-tier clubs still fighting for the title, but all eyes will be set on Lee Johnson's Sunderland, the League One side who will be trying to reach a semi-final stage of this competition for the first time since their exit from the Premier League a few years back. Other than that, teams such as Liverpool, Chelsea, and Arsenal should be considered as some of the favorites to reach the semis.

Without further ado, here are the main topics to consider in each of the games set to be played in the next couple of days.

Arsenal vs Sunderland - Tuesday, December 21 at 14:45 ET

Arsenal seem to be the team with the better chances to make it to the next round, as they will be facing League One side Sunderland for the spot in the final four. The Gunners have made it to this stage without conceding a goal, as they have beaten West Brom (6-0), Wimbledon (3-0), and Leeds United with three clean sheets to their name.

On the other side, Sunderland seem ready to begin their run back to the Premier League with a consistent season under coach Lee Johnson, which has seen them top the league for about eight week, although they are ranked third at the moment. The Black Cats have confirmed themselves as the only lower-tier team in this round by defeating Port Vale (2-1), Blackpool (3-2), Wigan Athletic (2-0), and Queens Park Rangers (3-1 after penalties). Although this will be a major test for them, fans from around the world will be cheering for them to make the semis and try to bring this historic side back to the heights their fans were used to.

Brentford vs Chelsea - Wednesday, December 22 at 14:45 ET

The Bees have enjoyed a successful run in the competition that has been fueled by their luck, which has seen them play two of their three matches at home. The team coached by Cliff Crown has beaten Forest Green Rovers (3-1), Oldham Athletic (7-0), and Stoke City (2-1) in their quest to reach this stage, and as if fate had wanted it, they will once again have the chance to host this one-leg tie against Chelsea.

The Blues will have to deal with a few issues if they want their League Cup campaign to continue. For starters, Thomas Tuchel will have to prepare this game without ten players, four of which were diagnosed with COVID-19 recently. This will be the third match for Chelsea in the competition, and both of their previous ties have been decided after penalty shootouts, and even with the large number of absences they will have to deal with, the current UCL champions will still have to be considered as the favorites to win this tie.

Liverpool vs Leicester - Wednesday, December 22 at 14:45 ET

Klopp's team will be playing their third game of the competition after winning both of their previous clashes without breaking a sweat. The first one saw them defeating Norwich City (3-0) and the second one concluded in a two-nil victory over Preston North End. Now, the Reds will face some stiff competition when they meet Leicester, but there are issues to consider them favorites to win the tie.

The Foxes will enter this clash after not being able to play for the past ten days due to a COVID-19 outbreak within the team. Six players are still recovering from the disease, while five more have been ruled out due to injuries. Hence, Brendan Rodgers will have to work a miracle to get the team past this stage. Prior to this meeting, Leicester City eliminated Millwall (2-0) and Brighton (4-2 after penalties), but it seems that their current woes could see them wave goodbye at their title chances.

Tottenham vs West Ham - Wednesday, December 22 at 14:45 ET

It has been some hectic weeks for Conte's men, who survived a massive spread of COVID-19 within the squad but were unable to defend their case in the UEFA Europa Conference League, which ended with them being kicked out of the tournament. Now, the Lilywhites will be playing their first match in two weeks when they host West Ham. Previously in this cup tournament, Spurs eliminated Wolverhampton (3-2 after penalties), and Burnley (1-0), although this match will be a bit more complicated since they will not have five different players out.

On the other hand, West Ham will enter this matchup with only one win in their last six, although their recent away record against Tottenham may give them hope for success (only one loss in five games). David Moyes' side eliminated Manchester United (1-0) and Manchester City (5-3 after penalties), and given Tottenham's current woes, it would seem proper to consider them as favorites to win this tie.
