Given that Chelsea suffered another slip-up in the Premier League over the weekend, drawing 0-0 with Wolves to drop six points behind Man City in the title race, it isn't much surprising to see the Blues back in the transfer rumors. What else can save a team's season than spending in January?
The champions of Europe are said to be eyeing a midfield reinforcement come the winter window, with one well-known Premier League ace reportedly being on the radar. That man is none other than Ruben Neves, the Wolves talent who has long appeared to be on the cusp of a move to England's elite clubs.
It's not hard to see where these links are coming from. Given that Kovacic, Kante, and Jorginho – Tuchel's preferred midfielders – have also missed a sizeable number of games due to injury, the London giants could do with extra quality in that area of pitch.
The signing of Saul from Atletico Madrid last summer was supposed to address this issue. However, Niguez's loan spell in Stamford Bridge so far has been nothing short of a flop, with Tuchel quickly losing faith in the once highly-rated Spaniard.
And according to TodoFichajes, Chelsea, having been admirers of Neves since his arrival in England from Porto back in 2017, are plotting a move for the Portuguese international once the window opens up next month. The reliability of this source isn't rock solid, hence the need for a pinch of salt.
Furthermore, Wolves will not be keen on seeing the midfielder depart in the middle of what could be a successful season for the West Midlands outfit.
Bruno Lage, the current head coach at the Molineux Stadium, is a huge admirer of the 24-year-old and will thus likely resist all attempts to steal the player. Wolves are currently eighth in the table, sitting only seven points behind fourth-placed Arsenal, and are thus in the race for European football this term.
Their recent 0-0 draw at home to Chelsea was the latest proof of their impressive improvement this season, having frustrated the likes of Liverpool and Man City prior to that. Will Neves stay put and complete the season at the Molineux or will the midfielder jump at the first opportunity of joining Chelsea? Only time will tell.
