The 33rd edition of the AFCON tournament continues with a triple header on Tuesday, January 11th.

It's day three of the 33rd installment of the AFCON tournament, and that means more games set to be played on Tuesday, January 11th. Fans will be treated to a triple header, with reigning champs Algeria facing Sierra Leone, while continental heavyweights Nigeria and Egypt prepare to do battle just a few hours later. The day will conclude with a clash between Sudan and minnows Guinea-Bissau. Here's all you need to know ahead of the next installment of matches taking place this Tuesday.

A triple header of matches taking place on Tuesday, January 11th

Algeria vs Sierra Leone: The first of three games will feature reigning champs Algeria and Sierra Leone, and given the form the Desert Foxes have been in lately, it's safe to say that Sierra Leone will have their work cut out for them. Not only did Algeria win the most recent installment of the Arab Cup, but they come into this contest having eased to a 3-0 win over Ghana in their AFCON preparations. Indeed, Djamel Belmadi's men haven't lost a game since being beaten by Morocco 3-0 three years ago, and have won 21 of their last 27 fixtures during this period.

Sierra Leone, meanwhile, narrowly scraped into the tournament after picking up just seven points from their six qualifying matches. It's set to be a tough test for the Leone stars, who haven't gotten out of the group in their last two AFCON appearances, and damage control will be the order of the day as they take on a team who have been in absolutely imperious form lately.

Nigeria vs Egypt: Given that they've won a whopping ten AFCON titles between them, it's safe to say that this will be a clash of heavyweights. Nigeria, to date, have won three titles, while Egypt have won seven. However, none have been recent, as Nigeria's last triumph took place in 2013, and Egypt's was in 2010. Not surprisingly, the rivalry between the two sides has been ongoing, dating back to the 1960's when the Super Eagles beat the Pharaohs 2-1. It's been a tough past few years for Nigeria, who failed to qualify for the AFCON tournament after winning it in 2013, but those times appear to be firmly behind them as the Super Eagles come into this contest having lost just one of their last six competitive matches.

Egypt, however, will naturally present a stern test. Although the Pharaohs have had their own struggles, namely losing in the 2017 final to Cameroon and crashed out in the round of 16 in 2019, they are the continent's most decorated side in this competition. Led by stars like Mohamed Salah, Egypt are dealing with some selection worries due to COVID, but Salah's blistering form for Liverpool, which has seen him net 16 goals will be of major concern for Nigeria, who are missing quite a few players due to injury or illness including key man Victor Osimhen.

Sudan vs Guinea-Bissau: Given that both Sudan and Guinea-Bissau are in the same quartet as Egypt and Nigeria, it's safe to say that this game will be even that more decisive for both teams. Whoever - if anyone - wins here could theoretically put themselves in contention to qualify for the round of 16 as the best third-placed team.

As such, a tense affair is likely on the cards, where both sides won't want to expose themselves too much to counter attacks, but at the same time, both Sudan and Guinea-Bissau will know that a single goal could ultimately prove to be the deciding factor. Neither come into this contest in good form, with Sudan failing to win their last ten games while Guinea-Bissau have won just one of their last six.

Who's in and who's out

Here's a quick rundown of the personnel situation for Algeria, Sierra Leone, Nigeria, Egypt, Sudan, and Guinea-Bissau ahead of their matches at the 2021 AFCON tournament:

Algeria: As of now, Algeria have no injury, suspension, or illness concerns.

Sierra Leone: Sierra Leone have a full strength squad heading into their opening fixture against Algeria on Tuesday.

Nigeria: Napoli star Victor Osimhen is out to COVID-19, which comes as a big blow for his side who'd hoped he would recover from a nasty facial injury. Both Emmanuel Dennis and Odion Ighalo aren't available after their clubs refused to release them for international duty.

Egypt: Both Mohamed Abogabal, Ibrahim Adel have tested positive for COVID, while Mohamed Hamdi is out injured.

Sudan: No major injury or illness concerns.

Guinea-Bissau: No major injury or illness concerns.
