Most-watched soccer games on U.S. TV: Jan. 3-9, 2022

TUDN USA's broadcast of a Liga MX Clausura Matchday 1 one-all draw between Puebla and Club America was the most-watched soccer game of the week in the USA. An average of 350,000 viewers watched the clash.

The match saw Club America go ahead in the first minute of play via winger Salvador Reyes Chavez. However, America's other winger Roger Martinez was sent off in the first half after receiving a second yellow card. Puebla made the best of the situation and closed out the first 45 minutes with a late goal from Maximiliano Araujo. America stopped the hosts from scoring in the second half, and each team walked away with a point.

USA Network's broadcast of a Premier League showdown between Manchester United and Wolverhampton on Monday, Jan. 3, was the second most-watched game of the week. Wolves defeated the Red Devils 1-0 thanks to a well-placed Joao Moutinho strike that beat United keeper David De Gea late in the game. As a result, Wolverhampton claimed their first win at Old Trafford since 1980. The broadcast received a 0.10 viewership rating for the 341,000 average viewers who watched the game.

TUDN's broadcast of Cruz Azul's 2-0 win over Club Tijuana on Saturday, Jan. 8, snatched the third place in last week's most-watched soccer games on U.S. TV podium. The broadcast attracted an average of 268,000 viewers and received a 0.11 viewership rating.

The weekend action in the Premier League kicks off with a bang as Man City prepare to do battle with Chelsea in the highly-anticipated Etihad Stadium fixture. The champions of England host the champions of Europe in a game that could hold significant weight in the title race. With the Cityzens sitting 10 points ahead at the top, victory for Guardiola's men would all but end the title ambitions of Chelsea and Liverpool. Mount and Co. enter this tie on the back of their 1-0 win at Tottenham in the Carabao Cup semifinal, securing their ticket to Wembley where they will face either Arsenal or Liverpool in the final. Tottenham vs Arsenal this Sunday at 11:30 a.m. ET live on Peacock and SiriusXM FC

While the title race looks to be a one-horse race, the battle to finish in the top four has heated up like never before. That is why this weekend's North London Derby will be significant. Despite having played two more games, only two points separate the fifth-placed Gunners from the sixth-placed Spurs, meaning either Arteta's side will strengthen their advantage over their bitter rivals or Conte's crew will leapfrog their despised neighbors. Harry Kane and Co. enter this clash on the back of their Carabao Cup semifinal exit, losing both home and away to Chelsea. Arsenal, on the other hand, secured an impressive goalless draw in the first leg of their encounter with Liverpool despite being a man down thanks to Granit Xhaka's early sending off at Anfield. Question marks have been raised as to whether this game will go through or be postponed due to the Gunners' selection crisis, but it is one to keep an eye on nonetheless.

Biggest stories of the week

Juventus and Azzurri dealt huge blow following star player's season-ending injury

On Sunday, Juventus battled to a 4-3 win over Roma in a highly entertaining seven-goal thriller. However, the victory for the Bianconeri to kick off 2022 came at a huge price.

During the match, Federico Chiesa sustained an injury which forced him to be subbed off. Initially thought to be a minor knee sprain, the latest news from Italy shows the signs of something way more ominous.

The 24-year-old, who has been one of Juve's brightest stars since arriving on a two-year loan deal from Fiorentina last season, has reportedly sustained a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). This means that he'll be out for the rest of the season, which comes as a huge blow not just for Juventus, but also for the Italian national team.

It comes at a tough time for both the Azzurri and Juventus. For the Bianconeri, they're in the midst of preparing for their upcoming Champions League clash against Villarreal next month, while Italy will have to secure their spot at the World Cup via the play-offs - which could see them face Portugal at some point.

AFCON 2021: Ref blows for full-time TWICE before the 90th minute in chaotic Tunisia vs Mali clashs

Wednesday saw one of the most chaotic and controversial matches in the history of the Africa Cup of Nations take place in the form of Tunisia vs Mali.

The ironic part is that this game already had enough talking points prior to its unsavory final minutes, with two penalties being awarded for handball despite some believing it to have been in a natural position on both occasions. The first one was given to Mali, which they converted, while the second one was awarded to Tunisia only after an intervention from VAR.

The latter spot kick, which came in the 76th minute, was missed. Additionally, Mali's El Bilal Toure was given a straight red card and was sent off, which would have made for an exciting end, but referee Janny Sikazwe stole the show after blowing for full-time TWICE before the 90th minute.

Yes, you've read that right! The Zambian match official prematurely ended the game on two separate occasions, the first coming in the 85th minute. This sparked confusion from the dugout as everyone but those on the pitch was aware that there was still time left on the clock.

This error was eventually corrected, with the referee calling the players back onto the pitch after realizing his mistake. However, things got even worse when the official blew the final whistle before full-time once again, this time ending the game over 10 seconds before the 90th-minute mark. This robbed the fourth official the chance of declaring the added time, which should have been lengthy due to the several pauses.

Things unfortunately escalated and security was forced to step in in order to safely escort the match officials off the pitch. Unfortunately, the drama did not end there as CAF officials quickly met to decide what to do about this controversy. Sadly, the decision came more than 20 minutes after the final whistle was blown as Mali coach Mohamed Magassouba's press conference was interrupted to inform him that the match would re-start in order to play out the final three minutes.

A while later, Les Aigles players returned to the pitch as a different referee was chosen to oversee the remainder of the game. However, the Tunisians refused to come out and thus the game did not resume. A complaint has been filed to the CAF but that was promptly dismissed. It was also later revealed that the referee suffered a sun stroke and was rushed to hospital.

El Clásico - All the records set by Real Madrid as they reach Supercopa Final

The first game in 2022 between Real Madrid and Barcelona turned out to be quite a nail-biter, with Real Madrid eventually prevailing despite not being able to seal the deal during the first 90 minutes.

Carlo Ancelotti's men held the lead twice during the game thanks to goals by Vinicius Jr and Karim Benzema, but Luuk de Jong and star replacement Ansu Fati leveled the game for Barcelona, forcing the teams to define the winner in extra time.

Once there, Fede Valverde's goal was enough for Los Blancos to seal their spot in the title clash set to be played on Sunday. With this win, Real Madrid have earned quite a few bragging rights over their bitter rivals, including their 100th win against Los Culés across all competitions.

In case you had not noticed, this game represents the sixth El Clásico in a row in which Los Blaugranas have not been able to beat Real Madrid, with the last five ending in victories for Real Madrid.

Barca's Coutinho secures loan deal to Aston Villa - reunites with Steven Gerrard

Four years after moving to the Camp Nou, Philippe Coutinho will be back in England. The Brazilian playmaker left Liverpool with much fanfare as Barcelona paid a whopping $198 million (£146 million/€160 million) for him in January 2018. Although he was part of the Blaugrana squad that won two La Liga titles, he ended up spending time away on loan with Bayern Munich during the 2019/2020 season, during which he was part of the team that won the treble at the end of that season.

However, Coutinho's time at Barcelona was quite disappointing. Despite scoring 26 goals in 106 apps across all comps, the player struggled with form and fitness, with an injury in December 2020 ruling him out for the rest of the season.

But now, he's been given a chance to revive his fortunes, as it was announced recently that he's secured a loan deal to Aston Villa. The Villans are currently under the guidance of none other than Steven Gerrard, who notably played alongside Coutinho during his time at Anfield, and will be hoping to help his former teammate rediscover the form that secured him that big money move to Barcelona four years ago.

Juventus ace set to leave the club on a free transfer once the season ends

Juventus will have to face one more summer with a departing star, as striker Paulo Dybala is set to leave the club once the season comes to an end. The Argentine player's talks to extend his contract with the bianconeri have hit a low point, and according to a source consulted by TyC Sports, the footballer is ready to listen to offers from any club interested in his services.

Dybala joined Juventus prior to the start of the 2015-16 season, and his time at the Allianz Stadium could conclude after scoring 109 goals for the Old Lady and in the middle of a crisis that sees the team struggling for a spot among the top five in Serie A.

Apparently, the player has decided not to extend his contract due to recent statements by team delegate Maurizio Arrivabene, who criticized his performances and urged him to "understand the weight of carrying Juve's Number 10 on his back". Added to those words, the team's decision to postpone the announcement of his contract extension have inclined Dybala to search for pastures new.

PSG remain keen on Zidane despite Man Utd's failed attempt to sign Pochettino

Marca report that key figures in the PSG board are already looking ahead to life after Pochettino, with director of football Leonardo, one of the most influential figures at the club, believing that Zinedine Zidane is the right man to take over Les Parisiens.

The French icon was linked with the Ligue 1 giants a while back after Mauricio Pochettino emerged as target no.1 for Man Utd in the wake of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's sacking. However, the 1998 World Cup winner had been on their radar way before that.

Unfortunately, the domino effect did not occur as the Argentine remained in Paris and the Frenchman opted against arriving at the club in the middle of the season. Regardless, Leonardo continues to keep an eye on the man who led Real Madrid to three consecutive UEFA Champions League titles.

Arsenal receive huge Vlahovic boost as the EPL giants target January move for Serie A star

One team keen on the services of highly-rated Fiorentina striker Dusan Vlahovic are Arsenal. While the likes of Man City, Juventus, and Chelsea have been linked with the 21-year-old, the north London outfit are nonetheless adamant on beating the competition to his signature.

According to the rumors, the player is not sold on a move to the Emirates Stadium, with Arsenal's lack of UEFA Champions League football over the past few years being a contributor. However, the main reason for his hesitancy regarding the Gunners is due to his desire to join Juventus, mirroring Mikel Arteta's unsuccessful pursuit of Manuel Locatelli last summer.

However, a ray of hope has been presented to Arsenal as well-respected Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio claims the Old Lady are not prioritizing a move for Vlahovic. In fact, the Italian giants are on the hunt for a new striker, but the Serbian sensation is not target no.1 for Allegri's side. Instead, Juventus are keen on Sassuolo's Gianluca Scamacca, whom they plan to begin negotiations for "as soon as possible".
