Sixteen clubs will compete in the Concacaf Champions League Round of 16 with the goal to reach the quarterfinals and ultimately be crowned regional club champion. The eight matchups will be decided by home and away games that will take place on Feb. 15-18 (first legs) and Feb. 22-24 (second legs).
The winner of the competition will represent the confederation at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Concacaf Champions League Round of 16 participants
Canada (2) – CF Montreal, Forge FC
Club de Foot Montreal makes its fifth appearance in the competition. The Canadian Major League Soccer side won the 2021 Canadian Championship, earning direct qualification to the SCCL Round of 16.
Canadian Premier League reigning champions Forge FC qualified as the 2021 Concacaf League better-ranked losing semi-finalist and will be making its debut in the SCCL.
Costa Rica (2) – Deportivo Saprissa, Santos de Guapiles
Deportivo Saprissa will make its 11th appearance after qualifying as the best-ranked losing quarterfinalist in the 2021 Concacaf League. As for Santos de Guapiles, this will be their first appearance in the competition after qualifying as the 2021 Concacaf League second-ranked losing quarterfinalist.
Guatelama (2) – CD Guastatoya, Comunicaciones FC
Like the Costa Rican teams, CD Guastatoya and Comunicaciones FC qualified for the 2022 SCCL through their 2021 Concacaf League results. Comunicaciones won the 2021 Concacaf League, earning its seventh appearance in the SCCL, and Guastatoya qualified as the Concacaf League worst-ranked losing semifinalist.
Haiti (1) – Cavaly AS
Cavaly AS is the only Haitian team that qualified for the 2022 SCCL. Cavaly earned direct qualification for winning the 2021 Concacaf Caribbean Club Championship and will be making its Champions League debut.
Honduras (1) – FC Motagua
FC Motagua will make its sixth SCCL appearance after qualifying as the 2021 Concacaf League runners-up.
Mexico (4) – Club Leon, Cruz Azul, Pumas UNAM, Santos Laguna
The Mexican teams that qualified to the 2022 SCCL won or finished second place in the Mexican topflight in 2020 or 2021. Leon and Cruz Azul were crowned champions in 2020 and 2021 respectively. As for Tigres UNAM and Santos Laguna, they finished as runners-ups in 2020 and 2021 respectively.
USA (4) – Colorado Rapids, New England Revolution, New York City FC, Seattle Sounders FC
The New England Revolution and New York City FC will both be making their second appearance in the Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League. New England qualified after winning the 2021 MLS Supporters’ Shield and New York qualified after winning the 2021 MLS Cup.
The Colorado Rapids earned its third berth to the SCCL for being the 2021 MLS Western Conference regular-season champions. And the Seattle Sounders qualified to the SCCL for the seventh time as the highest-ranked U.S.-based Division I club based on the 2021 MLS regular-season record.
