Over the past few years, Atlanta have pushed their way into the conversation by punching well above their weight. Quite similar to Udinese about a decade or so ago, La Dea have consistently battled against Italy's biggest sides to secure Champions League football. And in a clear demonstration that they're not just a one-hit wonder, Gian Piero Gasperini's side has qualified for the last three editions of the Champions League, and are hoping to make it a fourth straight appearance by finishing in the top four this season.
Meanwhile, interesting things were reportedly happening off the pitch, at least according to some quarters. Reports from Italy initially indicated that the plucky Bergamo outfit are set to acquire some new owners - namely, American firm KKR. The report from Sky Italia had claimed KKR will acquire about 85 percent of the club for an estimated $396 million (€350 million), but current CEO Luca Percassi.
Given Atalanta's success as of late, which saw them make an impressive run to the quarter-finals of the Champions League in 2020 and feature in two Coppa Italia finals in 2019 and 2021, it makes quite a bit of sense why anyone will want to consider taking a punt on them.
So far, Roma, AC Milan, Fiorentina, Spezia, Bologna and Venezia are all owned by North American patrons, while Parma, who's currently featuring in Serie B after being relegated last season.
There have been some reports that first denied the deal was in progresss, only for other reports to indicate that things are moving at a rapid pace - so fans will be best advised to continue to watch that space and see how things develop.
