Last week, we reported that Manchester United had decided to part ways with one of their major sponsors, Aeroflot, as a result of the ongoing conflict taking place in Eastern Europe.
And now, Schalke has also decided to follow suit, deciding to end their contract with energy conglomerate Gazprom. While Gazprom is a multi-national corporation, its headquarters are in St. Petersburg, Russia.
Schalke and Gazprom had been in partnership since January 2007, and in November 2009, the arrangement was extended. However, recent events have forced Schalke to re-evaluate things, and as of now, Schalke, who are presently featuring in the 2.Bundesliga after being relegated last season, will not be continuing their arrangement with Gazprom for the foreseeable future.
Their kits, which once featured Gazprom's logo prominently on the center, have been updated, and this was on full display this past weekend, when Schalke faced Karlsruher on the road in league action; the match ultimately finished all square at 1-1.
