Premier League round-up: Success for City, L'pool, Chelsea; United and West Ham frustrated

March 7, 2022 By Michelle Bonsu
A one-sided Manchester Derby was the highlight of this round, but there were other results that kept fans entertained all weekend.

Depending on what team you support, you were either really happy with this weekend's results or quite disappointed. The highlight of this round was the latest iteration of the world-famous Manchester Derby and it's safe to say that it was pretty much all one way traffic for one of these English giants.

Here's a quick summary of what went down this weekend across England's top flight.

Premier League rankings as of March 7

The top five as of March 7th, with Manchester City boasting a clear lead over the chasing pack.

Premier League headlines, stats, and other facts

Arsenal's kids are alright: The Gunners have experienced an uptick in form lately, and it's partially thanks to the top performances of their youngsters, especially this one in particular:

A new beginning for Newcastle? 2022 seems to be a better year so far for the Magpies, who've won four of their last five games and overall are unbeaten in their last seven league games. The last time they did this? Quite some time ago, in fact, and their form is only bettered by one team in the top flight at the moment:

Chelsea in cruise control: It's safe to say that second half of Chelsea's match against Burnley was a stark contrast to the first 45, as Thomas Tuchel's team came roaring out of the gates to blitz their opponents with four goals in the second period. Three of those came in just ten minutes, helping the Blues to match a record set nearly seven years ago:

De Bruyne becoming an Achilles heel of sorts for United: The Belgian star had a standout performances as he proved to be a real problem for Manchester United during this weekend's derby. Not only did he grab a brace, but also provided an assist for Riyad Mahrez, meaning that he was directly involved in three of City's four goals.

Kane inching closer towards top five all-time goal-scorer's list: The English ace netted a brace as Tottenham cruised to a 5-0 win over Everton on Monday, and in doing so now has scored 176 league goals. Only five players sit ahead of him at the moment, and it's likely that he could surpass two - Frank Lampard (177) and Sergio Aguero (184) before the end of the season. That only leaves Andrew Cole (187), Wayne Rooney (208), and Alan Shearer (260) ahead of him in the record books.

Top Premier League matches: March 12 - March 14, 2022

These games follow a couple of midweek make-up matches, with four games, including Norwich City vs Chelsea, all taking place on Thursday, March 10th at 14:30 EST (19:30 GMT).

After that, here are some games you won't want to miss:

Brighton vs Liverpool: It'll be back to domestic duties for Liverpool, who come into this match having featured against reigning Scudetto champs Inter in the Champions League. The Reds boasted a comfortable advantage having won the first leg 2-0 in Milan and are still on target for winning at least a couple more titles before the season is out. Although City do have a massive advantage, Liverpool clearly aren't giving up in their chase of the league leaders as they pursue what would be an unprecedented quadruple.

Manchester United vs Tottenham: After their humiliating loss in last weekend's Manchester Derby, the Red Devils will be keen to getting back to winning ways when they host Tottenham in a clash starring two of England's "Big Six" sides. Spurs, meanwhile, currently sit in seventh spot, but are definitely not out of the running for a top four berth - something that United are also really keen on securing for themselves at the end of this term.

Chelsea vs Newcastle United: Although they're well out of the title race, Chelsea are still in a great position to secure a Champions League football spot for themselves next season. The Blues, who have had a turbulent past few weeks following club owner Roman Abramovich's decision to step down and ultimately sell the club, presently sit in third spot, and will be looking to make it four league wins on the trot when they take on Newcastle. However, their upcoming visitors have found some form lately, and will be doing their utmost best to halt Chelsea in their tracks when they arrive at Stamford Bridge this weekend.

Arsenal vs Leicester City: After a rough patch, Leicester City will come into their upcoming tie with Arsenal having won their last two games. Likewise, Arsenal have seemingly turned their fortunes around as of late, having won four on the spin to move up into fourth spot. That being said, Manchester United, West Ham, and Tottenham haven't given up their own hopes of securing Champions League football, and although Arsenal do have a couple of games in hand, they're not totally guaranteed fourth spot unless if they can ensure they put enough of a gap between themselves and the teams chasing down Champions League football.

Crystal Palace vs Manchester City: The hosts have hit their stride recently, but that all looks set to potentially come undone when Manchester City come to town. Pep Guardiola's men have looked pretty much unstoppable lately, but they did slip up not too long ago when they were beaten 3-2 by Tottenham in a five-goal thriller. As such, Palace will naturally hope that the league leaders will have another off day as they look to ensure they remain in the top half of the table.
