Another big day for PSG's star trio was among the major talking points after the latest round of Ligue 1 matches.

The one-sided result featuring PSG and struggling Clermont had fans buzzing, and not solely because of the number of goals scored during that rout. History was made for three key players, while elsewhere, a relegation battle saw one side possibly giving themselves a route towards safety and

Here's how the race for the top scorer prize in Ligue 1 is shaping up, with Kylian Mbappe reclaiming top spot thanks to a hat-trick against struggling Clermont:

Another brilliant outing for PSG: PSG have scored a whopping 11 goals in their last two games, first cruising to a 5-1 win over Lorient before crushing Clermont 6-1 this past weekend. What's really interesting is that all, yes all, of their goals have come from just three players: Kylian Mbappe, Neymar, and Lionel Messi. Mbappe and Neymar were both absolutely outstanding this weekend as each grabbed a hat-trick from himself, which means that the duo have scored all but one of their team's last 11 goals (five each for Mbappe and Neymar). Messi writes his name in the history books: Although the seven-time Ballon d'Or winner didn't get on the score sheet against Clermont, he was still fully involved, with a hat-trick of assists to help Les Parisens dominate the match. In doing so, he set an interesting record in the process:

Bordeaux win relegation battle: While many eyes were on the teams at the top of the table, there was also another intriguing clash taking place this weekend. At the time of playing, Bordeaux sat in 20th, while Metz were in 19th, with both teams joint-tied on 23 points. However, on Sunday, they picked up a vital 3-1 win over Metz that has now moved them into 19th. Although not out of the drop zone just yet, it at least now moves them to just two behind Clermont, who sit in 17th and gives them a lifeline as they aim to avoid the drop at the end of this season.

Rennes' impressive run continues: Along with Strasbourg, Rennes have been quite impressive this season. Les Rennais have won four of their last five games and showed their mettle as they successfully overturned a 2-0 deficit against Reims to win the game 3-2. Martin Terrier, who is only bettered in goal output by Monaco's Ben Yedder and PSG ace Mbappe, was again on the scoresheet and the 25-year-old will be expected to again play a leading role as Rennes look to pick up a vital win over Monaco in the next round. 

Top Ligue 1 matches: April 15 - April 17, 2022

Rennes vs Monaco: Rennes have been one of the surprise packages this season, and now are on course to match their highest-ever finish in Ligue 1. Back during the 2019/2020 season, they finished third after Ligue 1 was cut short due to COVID-19, but this time around, they could potentially even go higher in the table with seven games left to go. With Marseille, who are three points ahead, facing PSG in a tricky test, Rennes could actually leap-frog them into second if they can pick up max points against Monaco. Of course, that will be much easier said than done given Les Rouges et Blancs have won their last three on the trot.

Lille vs Lens: Just one point separates reigning champs Lille from their upcoming opponent Lens, and given that Les Dogues could still snatch a spot in the Europa League next season if they can make one last late push, they'll be doing their utmost best to arrest their disappointing form, which has seen them draw their last two games, when Lens come to town this weekend.

PSG vs Olympique Marseille: While this won't be a title decider, any installment of the famous Le Classique is always one not to miss for Ligue 1 fans. At the moment, Les Parisiens are 12 points clear, and with just seven games to go, it's hard to see how they will end up not winning the title this season. That being said, Marseille have been in excellent form, with four wins on the bounce, and after a frustrating scoreless draw in their earlier Classique meeting, fans and neutrals alike will hope to see plenty of goals in this one.
