The Blaugrana side has confirmed itself as the most consistent for the second half of the season, but Los Blancos remain clear of the pack after this weekend's win.

The most recent weekend in La Liga has left fans asking for more, although the title race could now be down to three teams. Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Sevilla occupy the podium after Matchday 31, and with Atlético's unfortunate slip-up, it seems that these teams will be the ones that will go toe-to-toe to take the title home.

The league leaders kept their spot with a convincing win against Getafe while also keeping in mind their UEFA CL meeting against Chelsea in sight, but the real talk of the competition came as Barcelona survived three penalties to claim a late win against Levante. Elsewhere, Sevilla's 4-2 win in their match against Granada ended a four-game run for Lopetegui's men without a win, which helped them jump back in the title race.

Both the battle for the top spot and to maintain the category are heating up, so let's have a look at the key talking points after a hectic weekend in La Liga.

Who are the top teams in La Liga?

Los Blancos are now twelve points away from Barcelona and Sevilla, although Los Culés could cut that gap short if they win their game in hand. Atlético are fourth with 57 points after their weekend result, and Betis complete the top five with 56 points after 31 games.

La Liga top 3 scorers

Karim Benzema failed to score this weekend, but he managed to keep his lead as the best striker in La Liga, where he has a ten-goal lead over footballers such as his teammate Vinicius Jr. and Raúl De Tomás, who also were unable to add more goals to their tally this season.

La Liga – top headlines

Blaugranas set woeful record after conceding three penalties against Levante - The Catalan side claimed a gut-wrenching win at the Ciutat de Valencia that came after the ref hit them hard with three penalties against them, marking the first time in history in which a ref handed their rivals three spot kicks. Luckily for them, one of them did not find the back of the net and helped them accomplish their seventh win in a row.

Barcelona top European leagues in one specific goalscoring category - Sunday's match had one more record set for Barcelona, as their game-winning goal by Luuk de Jong helped them become the most prolific team in front of goal when it comes to scoring with their heads. Barcelona now top that category alongside Inter and Rennes, all three teams with 15 goals.

Real Madrid set new clean sheet record in win vs Getafe - The Spanish giants have taken one more step towards the league title, and their win this weekend saw them claim their ninth consecutive win against Madrid-based teams at home. To top it all, Los Merengues have kept eight clean sheets during that run, something never seen before in the Spanish top-flight.

La Liga - Must-watch games from April 15-18, 2022

Atlético Madrid vs Espanyol: Los Colchoneros dropped a massive game this weekend, and to make ammends with their fans, they must try as hard as possible to beat Espanyol, one of the teams battling to enter the top half of the table. Simeone's men may be effectively out of the title race, but a win here could secure them a spot in next year's UEFA Champions League.

Sevilla vs Real Madrid: This game could be key for the title race, as Julen Lopetegui's team could crack the title race wide open. Los Merengues have seemingly found their form after being defeated by Barcelona, and a win here could end Sevilla's title hopes and give them some breathing space at the top of the league's standindgs.

Barcelona vs Cádiz: Los Culés will want to add one more win to their unbeaten run that has extended in La Liga since December, and they will try to do so when they host Cádiz. Los Gaditanos are very much involved in the battle to avoid relegation, and while their options to win this game may be slim, they have managed to claim points against Los Culés in their most recent three matches against the Catalan side.
