After months of controversy about his future, Argentine coach Matías Almeyda has finally put an end to his term as the San José Earthquakes' coach. The former River Plate and Banfield was not able to lead the Californian side to the later stages of the MLS Playoffs in his three seasons at the helm, and with a good option to continue his career now open, it seems that the South American tactician's future will see him returning to Mexico.
In a brief press release, the MLS club thanked Almeyda for his efforts to turn things around for the 'Quakes, even if he was only able to lead them to only one playoff stage in his three-year stay with the club.
"Over the past four years, Matias has given everything he has to our club, and we recognize the efforts he made. We wish them well in the future," the press release stated.
Additionally, owner John Fisher issued a statement regarding Almeyda's exit from the club.
"I have had a chance to get to know him and his family during his time here, and we really appreciate what they have done for the Earthquakes," Fisher said.
Now, the Argentine coach may be inclined to take some time to think about his next move, but he may also choose to take one of the many coaching gigs that have emerged recently for him. One of those offers would see him returning to Chivas del Guadalajara, a club he led to a golden era that included one Liga MX title, two Copa MX crowns, and a CONCACAF Champions League trophy, all of these between 2015 and 2018.
Almeyda left Chivas to join the MLS side in 2018, but he has always been linked to a potential return to the Liga MX club whenever they have been forced to fire a coach, which happened in the past couple of days when the red and white side was forced to part ways with Marcelo Michel Leaño.
The now former boss to the MLS club may also consider one of the offers that were made to his entourage regarding a possible job with Chile or Colombia, two teams that will begin one more quest to play in the FIFA World Cup in 2023.
