Arteta reveals Tomiyasu update after West Ham win

Arteta drops Tomiyasu update as Arsenal move within three points of Chelsea after 2-1 West Ham win

May 1, 2022 By Ali M.
The Japanese ace limped off the pitch during the Gunners' crucial 2-1 victory over the Hammers, sparking concern among the fans.

Arsenal enjoyed another brilliant weekend in the Premier League.

After suffering three consecutive defeats straight after the international break, going down to Crystal Palace, Brighton, and Southampton; the Gunners looked to be down and out of the top four race. However, fast forward to today and the north London giants are within touching distance of third-placed Chelsea.

This is thanks to their brilliant three-game winning streak, their most recent being a 2-1 victory over West Ham today. Arteta's side visited the Hammers in a crucial fixture, having watched Chelsea drop points at Everton and Spurs move ahead of them thanks to a 3-1 triumph over Leicester. Hence, there was no room for error.

Neither side put in a great display, but the visitors did just enough to come away with the three points, as center-backs Rob Holding and Gabriel – Ben White was injured and absent – scored to seal the victory. Bowen got on the scoresheet shortly before half time to make the game 1-1 but Moyes' men were unable to capitalize off of that.

And just like that, Arsenal reclaimed the fourth spot from Spurs, whom they lead by two points, ahead of a crucial north London derby. Additionally, Chelsea's 1-0 defeat to the Toffees means Thomas Tuchel's men are only three points ahead and are within touching distance.

Furthermore, the Gunners mathematically cannot finish below sixth this season after their victory over West Ham, meaning that at the very least, Saka and Co. have qualified for the UEFA Europa League.  However, fans were left with a huge concern after highly-rated defender Takehiro Tomiyasu went off with a knock after appearing to aggravate his injury.

Given how long the Japanese ace has been out, many began worrying he would be ruled out for the remainder of the season alongside Kieran Tierney and Thomas Partey. Fortunately, Mikel Arteta offered an update on his pivotal defender and it was extremely positive.

Next up for the Gunners is a home clash with relegation-battling Leeds. Meanwhile, close rivals Tottenham have the daunting task of traveling to Anfield to face Liverpool while Chelsea will host Wolves on Saturday with the aim of returning to winning ways.
