The Spain Under-21 star has chosen to re-unite with former Barcelona manager Pep Guardiola at Bayern Munich in a decision that could prove to be a wrong one for the young midfielder.
Just a few weeks ago, many Manchester United fans were over the moon about the likely possibility of having to see Barcelona starlet, Thiago Alcantara in a Red Devils shirt. Reports suggested that the player had even agreed personal terms and that his departure from Camp Nou was imminent.

However, along came Bayern Munich, led by former Blaugrana manager Pep Guardiola, a man who filled the role of Thiago’s mentor with aplomb. The Spaniard stated just a few days back that he only wanted to sign the youngster and no one else. Since then, United fans wallowed in the same manner of despair they did when Lucas Moura rebuffed them after getting ever so close to joining them.

It was in the air and just a few hours back, it was official that Thiago Alcantara will play for the reigning European champions from next season. That is indeed a killer blow for David Moyes who despite never admitting once in any of his press-conferences, was keen on having the player at Old Trafford.

One of the main reasons why Thiago left Barcelona was that he was simply tired of playing second fiddle to the likes of Xavi Hernandez and Andres Iniesta. Furthermore, the signing of Neymar further strengthen the player’s resolve to seek pastures new, pastures where he will be allowed to flourish. That was something United were willing to offer him.

At Old Trafford, Thiago Alcantara was offered regular playing time, something he was never going to get had he stayed in Spain. Moyes was reportedly even willing to let the player decide which position would suit him better. In short, The Red Devils proved to be very accommodative future employers, something that is not common in most of the big clubs.

However, as it turns out, the lure of playing under Guardiola was substantially higher than that of playing under a manager who is yet to win any silverware regardless of the excellent job he did at Everton.

But then again, one has to question the whole logic behind Thiago’s decision to reunite under a mentor who is in charge of a team, oozing with so many midfielders. The likes of Javi Martinez, Luis Gustavo, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Toni Kroos, Thomas Muller, Xherdan Shaqiri and Mario Gotze are players who deserve to play regularly in the starting eleven and it would be quite interesting to see how Guardiola will be able to give Thiago considerable chances to show his worth.

As things stand, Bayern Munich possess one of the most talented midfield in world football and it would be interesting to see how a few of these players would get ample opportunities to play. This is the main reason why one has to question as to where Thiago would fit. No doubt the Spaniard is a huge talent but at the age of 22, the midfielder needs to be playing week in week out, something that might not happen in Germany.

Moreover, at a club like Bayern Munich, players are always under intense pressure to start well from the word go. German media, especially when it comes to scrutinising Munich players, has proven to be quite an enthusiastic one which means that Alcantara will have a lot of hard work to do if he is to reach the lofty heights that many expect him to.

Even though one has to admit that the temptation to reunite with his mentor and former manager was something Thiago could not have possibly resisted, but it still remains to be seen whether the decision will prove to be fruitful for his career.
