Pep Guardiola's men took a commanding lead in the Premier League title race with Liverpool.

Manchester City moved past Liverpool to assume the Premier League top spot by hammering Newcastle United in Sunday afternoon's Premier League encounter. The Citizens put five goals past the Magpies to move three points above the Reds with the title race set to go down the wire.

City needed the win to take a commanding position in the premiership after Liverpool dropped two points in their 1-1 draw with Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday. In a bid to bounce back from their Champions League semi-final heartbreak against Real Madrid, Pep Guardiola's side had the most perfect start with Raheem Sterling opening the scoring with a header in the 19th minute. In the 38th minute, Martin Dubravka failed to gather Gundogan's fierce long range shot, and was beaten to the rebound by Ruben Dias before Laporte turned the ball home.

It was a one-way street from that point onward and Rodri ensured that City's lead was a comfortable one by heading home their third of the day in the 61st minute. Substitute Phil Foden got on the scoresheet with a well-taken goal in the 90th minute before Raheem Sterling grabbed the brace with the last goal of the night in the 93rd minute.

A number of milestones were reached as a result of the game's outcome with Man City now boasting more wins against Newcastle United (28) than any other side in the Premier League's history. On the contrary, Raheem Sterling also became the first player since Sergio Aguero (106) to score more than 50 Premier League goals at the Etihad Stadium.

Man City will play against Wolves at the Molineux on Wednesday night before taking on West Ham and Aston Villa in their penultimate and final games of the season on May 15 and May 22 respectively. Title challengers Liverpool will Aston Villa, Southampton and Wolves on May 10, May 17 and May 22, respectively.
