AC Milan vs Atalanta: Can the Rossoneri lock down the Scudetto this weekend?

May 13, 2022 By Michelle Bonsu
The Rossoneri are on the cusp of winning their first Scudetto since 2011, but will need to pick up maximum points from their next two games.

Preview: Milan vs Atalanta

Two. That's the number of games AC Milan must win between now and the end of the 2021/22 Serie A campaign in order to win what would be their first Scudetto since 2011. With reigning champs Inter hot on their tails, it's been a very interesting race for the prize so far, and very well could go down to the final day if both sides do win their respective games. Stefano Pioli's men come into their penultimate Serie A match having won four on the trot, and certainly will be fancying their chances against an Atalanta side who've been punching well above their weight for the past few seasons, but won't be so lucky this time around when it comes to featuring in next season's Champions League.

Should the Rossoneri beat Atalanta, they will move further ahead of Inter, albeit temporarily until the Nerazzurri face a highly unfavored and relegation-threatened Cagliari side later on Sunday. Atalanta have caused their fair share of annoyances for Milan over the years, and have managed to frustrate the Diavolo at the Stadio San Siro, where they haven't lost since January 2014.

Despite their struggles, Atalanta have managed to win 12 road games so far in Serie A, a total that's only bettered by their upcoming opponents and the current league leaders. They will hope to again cause trouble for the Diavolo on Sunday evening as they desperately battle their way back following a downturn that saw them tumble out of the Champions League places. Although there will be no place for them next season in European club football's premier competition, the plucky side could still potentially feature in the Europa Conference League or even the Europa League, depending on how things go.

Milan, for their part, will be determined to get one hand on the Scudetto by beating a team that's caused them their fair share of issues over the years. With Inter having won the Coppa Italia, which included knocking the Rossoneri out, Milan certainly will not want to see their bitter rivals win the Scudetto - and a domestic double - at their expense.

Will Milan successfully overcome their Atalanta hoodoo at the Stadio San Siro and take one step closer towards their first Scudetto in over a decade?

Team news: Milan vs Atalanta
