Italy and Argentina, the winners of the EURO 2020 and the 2021 Copa America respectively, will lock horns at Wembley on Wednesday in a historic clash.

Preview: Italy vs Argentina

On Wednesday, many eyes will be tuned on a historic clash featuring Italy and Argentina at Wembley Stadium. For the first time in 29 years, the winners of the UEFA EURO championship and CONMEBOL's Copa America will lock horns. Previously, this trophy was known as the Artemio Franchi Cup, and the prior two installments took place in 1985 and 1993.

This time around, the one-off competition will be known as the CONMEBOL–UEFA Cup of Champions, but most people, including fans and the press, refer to this game as the 2022 Finalissima (Grand Finale). For Italy, this will be their first time featuring, while Argentina will be involved for the second time. Interestingly, La Albiceleste did win it back in 1993, when they won their 14th Copa America. Lionel Messi and his colleagues will come into this contest having ended their nearly 30-year long wait for a title after beating arch rivals Brazil 1-0 in last year's final.

Speaking of Messi, after a disappointing and frustrating campaign at PSG, which saw him struggle to reach his normally high standards, he will naturally be hoping to prove quite a few doubters wrong with a good showing here. Argentina will also be taking part at the 2022 World Cup and after an early exit last time, will be aiming to show that their poor showing in 2018 was just a bad day at the office and not a sign of something more troubling.

Italy, for their part, will not be featuring at this year's World Cup. Shockingly, despite winning the EURO 2020 competition - which represents the first major title for the Azzurri since the 2006 World Cup - they again ended up missing out. That is despite setting an impressive world record of 37 games sans defeat over a four year spell between October 2018 and 2021.

A series of bad results, namely a disappointing scoreless stalemate against Northern Ireland, followed by a shocking 1-0 loss to a highly unfancied North Macedonia side means that Roberto Mancini's men, for the second consecutive time, will be watching the World Cup from hone. Hence, this match could certainly help in boosting confidence among the players and the Azzurri fan base at large.

Team news: Italy vs Argentina

Italy: This could very well be Giorgio Chiellini's final match for Italy, as the 38-year-old could potentially move onto MLS after leaving Juventus. The Azzurri also will be missing quite a few players due to injury, including Lazio ace Ciro Immobile, Sassuolo's Domenico Berardi, and Juventus's Federico Chiesa.

Argentina: By contrast, Argentina do not have any major injury concerns, meaning that stars such as Messi, Paulo Dybala, Lautaro Martinez, and Angel Di Maria will all be vying for a spot in the starting XI.
