Most-watched games in the United States: May 23-29, 2022

It was one of the most interesting weeks in terms of football games and ratings in the United States, with the highest ratings for a football match in the past six months.

The game in question was none other than the title match for the UEFA Champions League, where Real Madrid claimed their 14th trophy in this tournament against Liverpool. The English side were unable to beat Los Merengues for the second time in four years, giving Carlo Ancelotti his fifth title in this competition, a record for all coaches in UEFA Champions League history. The match gave two TV channels in the country the highest numbers in terms of a football game this weekend, leaving no doubt about the relevance of the tournament in the United States.

The third most-watched game in the country saw Atlas becoming champions for the second time in the past six months against Pachuca in a nerve-wracking 2-1 game that gathered almost three quarters of a million fans watching this clash at some point, which confirmed Liga MX as one of the favorite domestic leagues to watch in this country.

This week in women's football, June 3, June 9, NWSL

Women's football fans around the globe have enjoyed some of the most interesting weeks of the season, but that will carry on with the kind of games they will be able to witness this weekend while focusing on one of the most competitive leagues in the world: the NWSL.

The American tournament is one of the few big competitions still being played, since almost all of the European domestic titles have already been handed out. For casual users, this will be a good chance to start following the competition a bit closer, but for those who are diehard fans of this tournament, the games that are scheduled for this weekend will only re-enhance their desire to keep watching their favorite footballers.

Without further ado, let's have a look at what the beautiful game will offer in terms of women's football matches.

2022 NWSL season

The tournament returns to action with the San Diego Wave still holding on to the top spot thanks to their three-game winning streak. The Wave's run has been fueled by Alex Morgan's form in front of goal, with the American international topping the goalscoring charts with six goals to her name.

There will be two teams trying to strip Morgan and Co. from the top spot: Angel City FC and the OL Reign. The Californian side will be gunning for the top spot when they visit the tough Portland Thorns, while the Reign will be traveling to Chicago to face the Red Stars. Other interesting games will feature the Wave's trip to face Kansas City, while the winners of the 2022 NWSL Challenge Cup, the North Carolina Courage, still look for their first win of the season against Racing Louisville FC.

Fans single out Liverpool star for blame as Real Madrid secure 14th Champions League title

Liverpool superstar Mohamed Salah has been singled out for blame by fans following the Reds' agonizing defeat to Real Madrid in Saturday night's Champions League final. The 29-year-old forward has been bashed massively on social media as supporters of the Reds believe that he could have potentially forced the game into extra-time had he been "less selfish".

The European cup final had its fair share of drama right from the start through to the end. The match, whose kick-off time was delayed due to security issues, began with chances falling the way of both Liverpool and Real Madrid. The former had the best of the lot and it took Thibaut Courtois producing one of the greatest-ever performances in the Champions League to deny the Premier League club a triumphant night.

After Karim Benzema's goal was controversially ruled out for offside, Real Madrid had their breakthrough in the second half through Vinicius Jr. in the 59th minute. The score line was kept intact with Courtois producing a series of game-defining saves. With barely 15 minutes left of the regulation time, the big Belgian superstar showed up once more for Los Blancos, stopping Salah from point blank range.

According to some fans on social media, the Egyptian made the wrong call by shooting at the goal as an easier route would have been to square the ball to Sadio Mane who had raced into the Madrid penalty area from the left flank.

Meanwhile, the night's result handed Real Madrid their 14th European cup title, extending their record as the most-decorated club in the competition's history. Relatively, Carlo Ancelotti became the manager to have won the UEFA Champions League the most times: four (for AC Milan in 2002/03 and 2006/07, for Real Madrid in 2013/14 and in 2021/22).

Speaking of Courtois, who made those brilliant saves…

Courtois makes history with clean sheet and massive saves vs Liverpool in UEFA Champions League final

If Real Madrid can brag about their 14th UEFA Champions League title, they have to thank Thibaut Courtois for it.

The Belgian ace proved why some experts name him as the best shot-stopper in the world after putting up a performance for the ages at the Stade de France. His saves during the second half were key to keep Real Madrid in the fight for the title, but once they had the lead, a couple of stops from shots by Sadio Mané and Mohamed Salah proved crucial for Los Blancos to lift their 14th continental title.

The former Chelsea shot-stopper made a whopping nine saves during that final, two of which appeared to be destined goals. As a result, Courtois has now written his name in history as no keeper has made more saves than that in a single UEFA Champions League final.

TRANSFER: Juventus star Chiellini to play in MLS after securing transfer

After spending his entire career in Italy, with nearly all of it spent at Juventus after signing in 2004, Giorgio Chiellini will be on the move.

The 37-year-old was given a glorious sending off during Juventus' last home game of the season. Although that match ended on a sour note as Lazio secured a draw, it still was quite a scene to behold and not surprisingly, leaving the veteran defender quite emotional.

Some fans were left wondering if Chiellini would hang up his boots this summer, albeit the player himself had never said anything about retiring.

Others wondered if he might follow in Gianluigi Buffon's footsteps and keep playing in Italy, possibly with a smaller club. Buffon is now on the books at Parma, where he started his professional career as a 17-year-old back in 1995, and made a sensational return last season.

Chiellini, for his part, started his professional career at Livorno in 2000, but unlike Buffon, he is not making a return to his boyhood club.

Rather, the soon to be 38-year-old will be trying his luck in MLS. After securing an 18-month deal, Chiellini will be featuring for LA Galaxy, and will officially become a player for them once his Juventus contract expires at the end of June.

Chiellini's contract with his new club is until December 2023, and certainly MLS fans will be looking forward to seeing him in the USA later this year.

Messi makes honest admission about Argentina's World Cup hopes after winning Finalissima

Argentina were in action on Wednesday, taking on Italy in the highly-anticipated CONMEBOL-UEFA Cup of Champions showdown, or more commonly referred to as Finalissima.

The Albiceleste, being the Copa America winners, took on the champions of Europe at Wembley Stadium in what many expected to be an intense 90 minutes of football.

While it was a brilliant match for anyone who spared time to watch it, it was a completely one-sided affair as the South American giants blitz past their European opponents, beating them 3-0 thanks to goals from Lautaro Martinez, Angel Di Maria, and Paulo Dybala, who came on as a late substitute.

This left everyone wondering. With Argentina, a nation in utter disarray at the 2018 World Cup, bossing the champions of Europe, are they now the ones to bet on come Qatar 2022? Lionel Messi, who enjoyed another vintage performance at Wembley, gave his thoughts on this matter in a candid conversation with reporters after the game.

La Pulga, who was named Man of the Match after his breathtaking performance tore Roberto Mancini's side apart, was under no illusions in regards to the upcoming FIFA World Cup. The seven-time Ballon d'Or winner did not shy away when discussing his nation's odds of winning, confessing that they are not the favorites for the eagerly-awaited tournament.

"We keep growing, that's what we are looking for. We are working on a day by day basis in order to improve further," Leo said, as per CGTN Sports Scene.

"We continue to say that we are not the top favorites, but we will put up a fight against anyone because this group is hopeful, it has clear goals.

"We must keep improving. Now we have important matches in September that we need to work [on] and improve in order to arrive the best way possible at our World Cup debut."

AC Milan secure new owners after takeover deal is completed

Fresh off winning their first Scudetto in over a decade, Milan will be under new ownership, after American hedge fund Elliott Management agreed to sell the club to RedBird, another American investment organization for an approximate $1.27 billion (€1.2 billion).

Bahraini investment fund Investcorp were reportedly initially in the running, but pulled out after hitting a snag during negotiations. According to reports, Elliott are still expected to retain a minority share in the club, and all aspects should be finalized by September of this year at the latest.

With Milan now set to feature in the Champions League once again, hopes will be high regarding the new owners and if they can spearhead a continued revival of the club who have endured their fair share of difficulties as of late.

Official: Tottenham Hotspur complete the signing of Inter Milan star

Croatian winger Ivan Perisic has secured a free transfer to Tottenham Hotspur, a statement by the club confirmed on Tuesday. The 33-year-old joins the Premier League on a two-year contract, having opted against signing a contract extension at Inter Milan.

Perisic has been at Inter Milan since 2015 and was instrumental in the club's Scudetto-winning run under Antonio Conte last season. Prior to that, he spent the 2019-20 season on loan at Bayern Munich where he won the UEFA Champions League with the Bavarians.

Before the season ended, Nerazzurri chief executive Giuseppe Marotta revealed that the club was keen on keeping Perisic at the club. However, he admitted that the player held all the chips to decide his future with a number of clubs having expressed interest in securing his service. On Tuesday, Tottenham Hotspur released a statement announcing the signing of the Croatian and it is believed that manager Antonio Conte played a key role in convincing the attacker to complete the switch.

Juventus boss aims dig at Dybala as Argentine's exit from the Bianconeri is confirmed

Speaking in an interview with DAZN, Juventus manager Massimiliano Allegri spoke about Paulo Dybala's exit from the club, asking him to re-discover himself rather than believing he has the skills to be known as one of the best in the world.

"Paulo needs to go back to being himself. There was a time where he got all carried out by those who labeled him as 'the new Messi'. A player can't go around trying to play, to think or to be like someone else," Allegri said.

Then, the coach tried to soften his words by adding how much he appreciated Dybala's skills on the pitch, adding: "He still has lots to give because he has an extraordinary technical ability, he is a wonderful player." It remains unclear where the Argentine will go next but he has been linked with the likes of Inter, Arsenal, and Tottenham.
