Neighboring countries Belgium and Netherlands will square off in a UEFA Nations League tie on Friday, June 3rd.

Preview: Belgium vs Netherlands

Familiar foes Belgium and the Netherlands will once again renew acquaintances when they lock horns in the latest installment of the UEFA Nations League on Friday evening. This will be the 128th meeting between the two sides, and while the Oranje do hold the slight head to head advantage (55 wins versus Belgium's 41), it has been quite some time since they actually beat their neighbors in a match.

Interestingly, despite being repeatedly ranked as the number one side in the world as per FIFA, Belgium really have little to show for why they deserve to be put in that spot. At the moment, they are presently ranked as second, but it did raise some eyebrows considering they have come up short in recent tournaments, including finishing third at the 2018 World Cup and crashing out in the quarter-finals at EURO 2016 and 2020. Indeed, they are the only team to manage a top spot ranking without winning a single continental title.

Of course, with players like Romelu Lukaku, Kevin De Bruyne, Thibaut Courtois and Eden Hazard in their ranks, there is much expected of this team. Given that many of those players are in their late 20s and 30s, the upcoming World Cup could represent Belgium's only chance to silence their doubters and earn a major title. There is, of course, also the UEFA Nations League, a competition that they finished in fourth spot last year.

Meanwhile, the Netherlands will be looking to make amends after failing to qualify for the 2018 World Cup. The Oranje did finish second in the inaugural UEFA Nations League, but will be aiming to put missing out on the 2018 World Cup firmly behind them and have a major impact in Qatar later this year.

Louis Van Gaal's side are also aiming to overturn a frustrating hoodoo, that has seen them fail to beat Belgium in over two decades. Holland and Belgium have ended up having to share the spoils from their last two matches (friendlies) and will be meeting in a competitive tie for the first time since 1998.
