Chelsea beat Arsenal in race for Raphinha

Report: Chelsea beat Arsenal in race for Raphinha's signing

June 28, 2022 By Emmanuel K. Budu-Annor
The Blues have reportedly completed a coup and are on the verge of sealing a deal to bring the Brazilian to Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea have edged Arsenal in the race for the signature of Leed United winger Raphinha, multiple sources in the UK have confirmed. The report came after the Blues had an initial bid in the excess of $67M (£55M) accepted by the Peakcocks on Tuesday evening.

With Barcelona stalling in their pursuit of Raphinha, a number of Premier League clubs emerged and expressed interest in recruiting the Brazlian star. Among them were London trio Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur. On Monday, it came to light that the Gunners were favorites to secure the service of the 25-year-old winger and were set to meet Leeds for further discussions. Having completed a quick-fire move for Man City's Gabriel Jesus, there was optimism that Mikel Arterta's side could complete another coup for one of the league's top talent.

However, the dream of reuniting Raphinha with his international teammate has seemingly hit a roadblock with Chelsea hijacking the deal. According to the Guardian, the Gunners could not reach an agreement with Leeds as their offer was short of what their London rivals offered Leeds. An offer of $67M (£55M) plus performance-related add-ons was tabled by the Blues and has been accepted by Leeds, with Barcelona also failing to match the offer from Thomas Tuchel side.

Chelsea will now discuss personal terms with Raphinha's agent Deco and are expected to complete the deal in the coming days. Should all go according to plan, a four-year deal will be penned by the player whose currently contract at Leeds expires in 2024.
