Northern Ireland will be making their debut this summer and will face Norway in their tournament opener.

Preview: Norway vs Northern Ireland

After yesterday's opening match, which saw hosts England battle to a 1-0 win over Austria, the other two teams in Group A will meet as Norway take on Northern Ireland. On paper, this looks like it will be a heavily lopsided clash, as Northern Ireland are making their first appearance at the UEFA Women's EURO competition, and to compound matters, Kenny Shiels's side are on a four match losing streak, with just one win in their last six coming into this contest.

Despite that poor run of form, certainly, the minnows will be seeking what would be a major upset. Ranked 47th in the world - the lowest of any of the 16 teams taking part in the 2022 UEFA Women's EURO tournament - earned a deserved spot after beating Ukraine during the play-offs. Of course, that will be much easier said than done. Although Norway performed horribly at the last EURO competition, during which they finished last in their quartet after losing all three of their group stage matches, the Scandinavian side are nonetheless viewed as one of the heavy favorites to win this summer's title.

With players like Ada Hegerberg, who won the Ballon d'Or in 2018 and is back with the squad after initially stepping away, as well as Caroline Graham Hansen, who netted a hat-trick against Northern Ireland during qualifiers, Norway are expected to make amends for their disappointing showing five years ago and make a deep run at this summer's competition.

Of course, anything really is possible in football, and upsets have basically become par for the course in international tournaments - whether it be the men's or women's games. Although this competition is still in its nascent stages, viewers will be certainly hoping to see a couple of minnows upset the cards, and given that the match will be played in Southampton, it is safe to say that Northern Ireland will have quite a bit of travelling fan support on Tuesday evening.
