The Lionesses kept their record going with an inspirational win in the European competition's curtain raiser.

England Women's National Team kept their longest unbeaten run in their history intact by getting off to winning start at Euro 2022. The Lionesses secured the first three points of the campaign at the expense of Austria, thanks to a brilliant finish from Beth Mead in front of a pack atmosphere at Old Trafford on Wednesday night.

With the tournament returning to English soil for the first time since 2005, Sarina Wiegman's team were required to put up a spectacle in the tournaments curtain-raiser against their Group A opponents. They started proceedings in a confident fashion and were rewarded shortly after, with the first and only goal of the game coming inside the 16th minute. A well-executed chip over the head of Manuela Zinsberger put England in front but had to endure the scrunity of VAR before being passed as la egitimate strike.

A number of chances could have resulted in goals for the hosts but for the colossal performance put in by the Austrian goalie and her defensive line. Relatively, their side also gave the English defence a lot to think about and were able dispatch a series of shots at the goal of the hosts but were dealt by Mary Earps in-between the post.

With the early goal proving to be the decider, England extended their unbeaten run under manager Sarina Wiegman to 15 (W13 D2, their longest ever run in history. The clash with Austria at Old Trafford also set the record for the largest crowd for a women's European Championship match with 68,871 fans in attendance.
