Matchday two of the 2022 UEFA Women's EURO competition continues as reigning champs the Netherlands take on Portugal, while Sweden lock horns with Switzerland on Wednesday, July 13th.

Preview: Sweden vs Switzerland

Sweden come into this game having settled for a one-all draw with the Netherlands, and as such, will be aiming to pick up their first win of this summer's tournament when they take on Switzerland on Wednesday. Despite not losing their opening match, it will still be a disappointing result for Peter Gerhardsson's side especially given that they had taken a lead only to concede and end up dropping two vital points. Sweden do have a strong track record at Women's EURO competitions, as they have always qualified for the knockout rounds in every single one of their prior participations.

Additionally, given that they easily beat Switzerland 4-1 in their last meeting back in February and have never lost to those opponents, the Scandinavian side will be certainly fancying their chances here. Switzerland, for their part, also settled for a draw as they were unable to beat Portugal, and like Sweden, will be quite disappointed with that result as they took an early 2-0 lead but were unable to hang on to it.

Switzerland's form is also a major source of concern, as they are on a seven match winless run and in fact, are still seeking their first win of 2022. La Nati have never qualified for a knockout rounds at a Women's EURO championship, and given that they still do have to play the Netherlands in this quartet, will be facing an uphill battle to get some points on the board during their next two matches.

Team news: Sweden vs Switzerland

Sweden: No injury, illness, or suspension concerns for Sweden ahead of this game.

Switzerland: Switzerland have been hit really hard by a nasty stomach bug, with Eseosa Aigbogun, Svenja Fölmli, Seraina Friedli, Rahel Kiwic, Lara Marti, Sandrine Mauron, Julia Stierli and Riola Xhemaili all missing training recently due to having to being in isolation. Naturally, the group will be closely monitored to see if any of these players will be able to be involved in Wednesday's match.  In addition, Aigbogun, Viola Calligaris, and Géraldine Reuteler are all in danger of being suspended on matchday three if they pick up cards in this game.

  • To date, not only have Switzerland never beaten Sweden (P2 L2) but they have never scored a goal (with eight goals conceded from their prior two meetings)

Preview: Netherlands vs Portugal

The Netherlands come into this competition as the reigning champs, but will have some work to do if they want to secure a spot in the knockout rounds. After fighting to come from 1-0 down to secure a draw against Sweden in their tournament opener, the Oranje will be looking to maintain their strong historical record when they take on Portugal. To date, the Netherlands have the vastly superior head to head, as they have only lost once to their upcoming opponents once - and that was back in December 2001.

Of course, nothing is a given in football, and anything could happen on Wednesday, especially as the Oranje will be missing several players due to injury. That being said, given that they have won all four of the last competitive meetings between the two sides, they are nonetheless still viewed as the favorites to come out on top in this game.

Although they face a tough task ahead, Portugal will still be feeling confident in their chances. They successfully came back from two goals down to secure a draw, and made history in the process as the Selecção were two goals behind after just five minutes yet scored twice in the second to snatch a vital point. Portugal's appearance here has been by a stroke of good fortune, as they did lose 1-0 to Russia during the playoffs but were given a ticket after Russian teams were kicked out of all international competitions.

Will Portugal, although highly unfancied, be able to cause the Netherlands some major worries on matchday two?

Team news: Netherlands vs Portugal

Netherlands: The reigning champs have been dealt a huge blow as skipper and shot-stopper Sari van Veenendaal has been ruled out of the competition due to an injury. In addition, defender Aniek Nouwen will also miss this game after coming off injured during the draw with Sweden, while Jackie Groenen is a definite absentee as a result of an illness.

Portugal: No injury, suspensions, or illnesses ahead of this match.
