Matchday two of the 2022 UEFA Women's EURO competition finishes on Thursday, July 14th as Italy hope to recover against Iceland and France take on Belgium.

Preview: Italy vs Iceland

After setting a rather unwanted record in their EURO opener, Italy will be desperate to get back to winning ways when they face Iceland. The Azzurre were absolutely humiliated as they lost 5-1 to France, and became the first team in competition history to concede five goals in one half. This also matches their worst ever result at a EURO tournament since losing 4-0 to Germany back in 2005, so it goes without saying that Italy will be aiming to rebound in dramatic fashion in what will be their first competitive meeting in 20 years.

The last time Italy and Iceland met was during a friendly double-header back in April 2021, during which Italy won one and drew the other. Overall, Italy are unbeaten in their last four meetings with Iceland (W2 D2) but they obviously will not be taking this game for granted, especially considering that they not only have lost five of their last six EURO games but have kept just three clean sheets in their last 33 EURO matches.

Meanwhile, Iceland settled for a one-all draw against Belgium, which still does put them in contention in terms of qualifying. If they can beat Italy, they will move onto four points, and although France will present a stern test, they just might be able to qualify for the round of 16 as group runners-up, especially if France, as many expect, beat Belgium in the other match being played later on Thursday.

Team news: Italy vs Iceland

Italy: Lisa Boattin, Sara Gama, and Flaminia Simonetti are all in danger of missing out on matchday three if they pick up cautions here.

Iceland: No injury or suspension worries for Iceland.

Preview: France vs Belgium

France made quite a statement on matchday one as they cruised to a 5-1 win over Italy, and now Les Bleues could possibly secure their spot in the quarter-finals with a win over Belgium on Thursday evening. So far, hosts England and Germany have already booked their spots, and France, thanks to their resounding win, presently sit on top of Group D. Simply put, they will be fancying their chances against a Belgium side who really failed to ignite as they were held to a one-all draw with Iceland, and given that they are on a six match winning streak, it will be hard to find anyone who would be brave enough to bet against Corrine Diacre's squad from picking up a win on Thursday.

Grace Geyoro, on her 50th appearance for her country, made history by becoming the first player to score a first half hat-trick during a women's EURO competition, and she will aim to score here again as she looks to catch up to England's Beth Mead, who has four goals to her name so far in thie competition.

Of course, Belgium will be doing their utmost best to have a say in the conversation, but history is not on their side. Not only have they lost their last six meetings with France, but they have not beaten Les Bleues since May 1985. Overall, they have won just one of their last 11 encounters with France (D2 L8), which is a dramatic downturn from their performances in prior matches, which had seen them win three of their first five (D1 L1).

Team news: France vs Belgium

France: No injuries, illnesses, or suspensions ahead of this match.

Belgium: Both Davina Philtjens and Justine Vanhaevermaet will need to be very careful here if they do not want to be suspended on matchday three.
