The Lionesses fought back from a goal down to book a place in the semi-finals of the ongoing tournament.

England have beaten Spain in extra time to book a place in the semi-finals of this year's Women European Championship. Georgia Stanway was the heroine of the night with his extra-time goal completing a dramatic comeback for Sarina Wiegman's side in the Amex Stadium on Wednesday night.

With both the men and women's teams reaching the semi-finals of the last four major competition, the threat of England failing to replicate the feat was gaping. Aside the fact that Spain was the only side that the Lionesses had failed to beat in the first 17 games played under Wiegman, they concede first in the quarter-final encounter following a sloppy start to the second half.

Up until the 84th minute, there was almost surety that Esther Gonzalez's goal would guide La Roja to the last four stage at the expense of the host. However, the tide turned after substitute Ella Toone fired home the host's equalizer from close range, forcing the game into extra-time. Six minutes into proceedings, Georgia Stanway etched her name into the history books by firing home a sensational stunner from long-range to hand her side the advantage.

Not much ensued after England assumed the driving seat and they would go on to protect the lead till the end. With the result, they will wait for the winner of the third quarter-final clash between Sweden and Belgium to know their opponents for the semi-final scheduled to take place at Bramall Lane on July 26th. The Lionesses are hoping to host and win the Women's European Championship for their first time in their history, with their best ever finishes being second in the 1984 and 2009 editions.
