13 years after their loss in 2009, England will hope to finally end their long wait for a major title as they take on familiar foes Germany.

Preview: England vs Germany

After over three weeks of exciting matches, the 2022 UEFA Women's EURO final is finally here. Amazingly, not a single one of the 30 matches played so far have finished scoreless, with a total of 92 goals scored, and there will certainly be more in Sunday's anticipated final between England and Germany.

England, who are serving as hosts, have had a fantastic competition so far. Currently under the leadership of Sarina Wiegman, who guided the Netherlands to victory five years ago, the Lionesses are on the cusp of ending their long wait for a continental title. In addition, should England win on Sunday, they will also end England's overall 50-plus year wait for continental glory, as the last time any English side - male or female - won a major title was back in 1966.

Certainly, the Lionesses will be extra motivated after the heartbreak the Three Lions suffered last summer, as they were beaten on penalties by Italy. In addition, England's women's side were beaten at this juncture 13 years ago in Finland by none other than upcoming opponents Germany, who swept them aside in a 6-2 rout to clinch what was then their seventh title.

It is interesting to note that Wiegman has started with the same XI throughout the entire competition, and could become the first coach overall in this competition (men's and women's) to do this if she does not change her preferred starting line-up on Sunday. However, performances from players like super-sub Alessia Russo, who set social media alight following her back-heeled goal during England's 4-0 win over Sweden could force her manager to maybe mix things up a bit.

Meanwhile, Martina Voss-Tecklenburg's side are seeking to win their ninth title and to make amends for their disappointing exit back in 2017. Although Germany are the most decorated side in this competition, with eight titles to their name, there were some who had written off die Nationalelf even before the tournament kicked off. Well, certainly, Germany have proved those doubters wrong, and following their hard-fought semi-finals victory over France, they are just theoretically 90 minutes away from winning yet another EURO title.

Of course, much of the crowd at Wembley will be cheering the Lionesses on, hoping that "It's [finally] coming home]". Will England be able to get the job done on Sunday? Or will they suffer heartbreak once again at the hands of a very familiar opponent?
