The Lionesses etched their name in the record books by winning their first-ever continental trophy.

After two unsuccessful final stints, it is indeed finally home! The England Women's National Team etched its name in the history books after defeating Germany in the final of the 2022 UEFA Women's European Championship, becoming continental champions for the first-ever.

The test was always going to be a difficult one for the two teams involved but in front of a record 87,192 fans inside Wembley, the host nation held their own and delivered their greatest-ever performance in their European football history. A frantic first 45 minute ended with either of the sides failing to find the back of the net. 17 minutes after play resumed for the second half, substitute Ella Toone fired the Lionesses into the driving seat with a brilliant chip goal.

Sarah Wiegmann's side subsequently resorted to defending their lead but were overrun by the Germans whose resilience produced a desirable outcome. In the 72nd minute, parity was restored when Lina Magull got on the end of Tabea Wassmuth's pass and put it past Mary Earps at the near post. With none of the teams producing anymore goals, the game entered extra-time.

The first half of the 30 minutes period could also not deliver any goal but the second period began on a positive note for England. Five minutes into proceedings, Chloe Kelly, who had earlier replaced the tournament's top goalscorer Beth Mead, fired home the eventual game winner - her first international goal - to spark massive frenzy inside Wembley.
