The tournament between MLS and Liga MX clubs will have a shortened format for this edition due to the fixture congestion caused by the FIFA World Cup.

The collaboration between Liga MX and the Major League Soccer continues this year. The first event of this partnership for the ongoing year takes place this Wednesday, with the Leagues Cup 2022 Showcase featuring four of the most popular teams in each league.

The most-winning teams in Liga MX, América and Chivas del Guadalajara, will have the honor of representing Liga MX. As for the MLS, both teams from Los Angeles will be involved in the tournament, as the LA Galaxy and Los Angeles FC get ready to defend the league's legacy against their rivals from the Southern border.

The tournament had to suffer a few changes for this year's edition due to the massive number of fixtures set to be played in both leagues and for CONCACAF. These two games will mark the beginning of this year's edition, while three more will be played in September to make up for the cancellation of the proper competition.

Let's have a look at tonight's games in chronological order.

Guadalajara vs LA Galaxy

The first match of the evening will feature the LA Galaxy against arguably the most popular team in Mexico, but the clash will come in one of the worst moments for both clubs in recent history.

The Galaxy will make it to this match sitting in ninth place of the MLS' Western Conference, with a record of nine wins, three draws, and ten losses. It has not been one of the beest seasons for Greg Vanney's men, but they still have time to turn things around if they want to make it to the playoffs.

Guadalajara will enter this match in even worse form, as Ricardo Cadena's men have not won any of their six fixtures in the ongoing Liga MX season. So far, Guadalajara have drawn five of their games while only being able to score three goals. To make matters worse, El Rebaño's players have missed two penalty kicks in their recent games, which has prevented them from winning their first game of the season.

This game will have an added element of controversy, as it will be the first time in which Chicharito faces his boyhood club. The Mexican striker has had a prolific career in Europe, but it seems that his recent seasons have been overshadowed by his controversies off the pitch, which include not being named to the Mexican National Team since 2019. Either way, his first meeting with Chivas after quite a few years will be interesting to watch.

Los Angeles FC vs América

The second match of the evening will be quite challenging for the visitors, as the LAFC will welcome Las Águilas as the best team in the league. The black and gold team has one of the best attacking units, led by Carlos Vela and José Cifuentes and with the recent addition of Gareth Bale. In defense, the squad led by Steve Cherundolo has also added talent with forrmer Italy international Giorgio Chiellini, who will surely boost a talented defense that has only conceded 23 goals, the third-best record so far in the competition.

As for their rivals, América has not been as impressive as they were during the final stages of last season under coach Fernando Ortiz, who seems to have lost his magic once he was named first-team coach instead of being just a caretaker last season. Los Azulcremas have only won one of their games this season, with three losses and one draw in the rest of their fixtures. Luckily for them, they still have a game in hand to make up for that poor start, but if things keep going the way they are for the yellow and blue team, coach Ortíz may not be the man to turn things around.

As with the other match, this will be a fixture that will come with a hue of expectation, as former Mexico international Carlos Vela will be facing some of his former teammates with El Tri, including four-time FIFA World Cup nominee Memo Ochoa, right-back Miguel Layún, and defender Nestor Araujo. While it may seem to some as an uneven match, the big game of the evening promises to be an interesting friendly between two of the most talented teams in their respective leagues.
