Man Utd hit new low as Brighton secures win at OT

Manchester United hit new low as Brighton secure historic win at Old Trafford

August 7, 2022 By Emmanuel K. Budu-Annor
The Red Devils kicked off the Erik ten Hag era on a bad note by losing their first game of the new league campaign.

Brighton & Hove Albion condemned Manchester United to a new low by securing their first ever win at Old Trafford to successfully ruin the start to the Erik ten Hag era. The Seagulls managed a deserved 2-1 victory over the Red Devils to make history by claiming the famous result away from home.

The afternoon's encounter began with Bruno Fernandes missing an important chance to put the hosts ahead and it did not take long for Brighton to punish United for their inefficiency. Pascal Gross met Danny Welbeck's cross at the back post and was able to beat David de Gea to give the visitors the lead inside the 30th minute. Nine minutes later, the German capitalised on another moment of poor defending by the hosts to double his side's tally, grabbing his sixth career goal against the Red Devils in the process.

In the second half, Manchester United improved on their performance in the first 45 minutes having multiple sniffs at the Brighton goal. Their effort was eventually rewarded in the 67th minute when goalkeeper Robert Sanchez made a mess in dealing with a corner and had the ball deflecting off Mac Allister into the post.

Despite having had Cristiano Ronaldo introduced into the fray early on, United could not press on for an equalizer, picking up their first-ever Premier League defeat at home to Brighton in the process. With the result, new boss Erik ten Hag landed an unwanted record of his own, becoming the first Manchester United manager to lose his first Premier League game in charge since Louis van Gaal in August 2014 against Swansea City.
