Watch: Nunez sees red in draw vs Crystal Palace

Watch: Nunez sent off for violent conduct in Premier League home debut as Crystal Palace steal point from Anfield

August 15, 2022 By Emmanuel K. Budu-Annor
The Uruguayan marred his first appearance at Anfield by seeing a red in the night's clash with Crystal Palace.

Liverpool new-boy Darwin Nunez had a night to forget at Anfield as Liverpool dropped points once more in their second Premier League game of the season. The 22-year-old striker received his marching orders for a headbutt incident before the Reds were held to a 1-1 draw in Monday night's clash with Crystal Palace.

After a spirited start to life in England which saw Nunez scoring in Liverpool's Community Shield Triumph over Manchester City, the Uruguayan reintroduced himself to fans of the English top-flight league by scoring in the Reds' 2-2 draw with Fulham in their first league game of the season. Having made an impact off the bench in the previous fixture, the former Benfica striker was handed a starting berth against Palace with the hope of extending his scoring streak. However, it was a rather quiet night for the attacker who failed to hit the target with a single shot despite making five attempt at goal.

With Wilfred Zaha putting the visitors in front with his first goal of the season in the 32nd minute, Liverpool had it all to do in the second half. However, the faced their quest to fashion a comeback was complicated after seeing Nunez receive a straight red card for a headbutt on Joachim Anderson. The two players had been pictured in a brief tussle in the box a moment earlier but things apparently escalated quickly to the disadvantage of the hosts.

Despite the incident, Liverpool upped the ante to restore parity through a brilliant solo-effort from Luis Diaz in the 61st minute. However, the Reds could not get the all-important strike to seal the comeback as they picked up their second successive draw of this Premier League season.

For Nunez, the red card meant that he is the second player in Liverpool's Premier League history to be sent off on his first appearance at Anfield. Former Reds' striker Joe Cole first managed the unwanted feat against Arsenal in 2010, coincidentally, on August 15th.
