Nacional just need a win next week to capture the Uruguayan Apertura championship after beating Wanderers 3-1 at the Centenario stadium on Sunday.
Nacional are just a step away from clinching the Uruguayan Apertura championship, after beating Wanderers 3-1 at the Centenario stadium on Sunday. With the win, Nacional leaped above both Danubio and Penarol into first-place of the table, with 29 points.

Danubio, who came into the round as the league leaders, dropped down to third-place, after suffering an unexpected 1-0 defeat to Cerro Largo in Melo. With 26 points, Danubio need to beat Bella Vista next week and pray that both Nacional and Penarol fail to pick up maximum points in their respective games.

On Saturday, Penarol thrashed Rampla Juniors 4-1 to remain with an outside shot at the title. With 27 points, Penarol must beat Cerrito and hope that Nacional drop points against Liverpool in the final round of the season next weekend.

With goals from Nicolas Royon and Elias Figueroa, Liverpool rallied to defeat Cerrito 2-1 in an action-packed encounter at the Maracana stadium.

Nelson Techera had put Cerrito ahead three minutes into the second half, however, their joy lasted shortly as two minutes later Royon drew the visitors level. Royon suffered a fracture to his shin shortly afterwards, and will undergo surgery in the following days.

Despite the loss of a key player, Liverpool ended up claiming the three points courtesy of a 57th minute strike from Figueroa. It was Liverpool's sixth win of the season.

Penarol moved into second-place of the Apertura championship, after thrashing Rampla Juniors 4-1 at the Centenario stadium on Saturday. Penarol still have an outside chance of winning the league, but they must hope that Nacional drop points against Liverpool next week.

Having lost 2-1 to Nacional in the Uruguayan superclasico last week, Penarol knew that the three points were essential to stay in the title hunt. They went into the break with a two-goal advantage after goals from Alejandro Gonzalez in the 35th minute and from Marcelo Zalayeta in the 42nd minute.

Penarol, who were losing finalists of the 2011 Copa Libertadores, continued to dominate their opponents, adding their third goal through captain Dario Rodriguez in the 64th minute. Rampla, who were on the verge of losing their 9th match of the season, pulled a goal back through Paul Dzeruvs, however, six minutes later Zalayeta restored Penarol's advantage, to give the Uruguayan giants a big win.

Danubio dropped from the top of the table, after suffering an unexpected 1-0 defeat to Cerro Largo on Sunday. The result was a huge set-back for the side, as they seemed destined to clinch the title.

Having made a 400km trip to Melo from Montevideo, Danubio, the then-league leaders, were the favourites to return home with the three points, however, they were ousted by a compact side that dominated great part of the match.

The only goal of the match was converted by striker Rino Lucas in the 49th minute. Despite the dismissal of Rodrigo de Olivera in the 72nd minute, Cerro Largo defended as a unit and kept Danubio at bay for the duration of the ninety minutes.

Nacional defeated Wanderers 3-1 at the Centenario stadium in Montevideo to move within one win from the Uruguayan Apertura championship with only one round left to play in the season.

With two goals from striker Alexander Medina, 43rd and 68th minutes, and another from youngster Gonzalo Bueno in the 73rd minute, the 43-time Uruguayan champions cruised to a comfortable victory. Antonio Pacheco, who starred for Nacional's arch-rivals Penarol for several years, had drawn Wanderers level in the 57th minute.

Nacional, who are coached by former Argentine international Marcelo Gallardo, are the league's highest scorers with 26 goals, while they have conceded only 11 goals in fourteen matches.
