Preview

Two of the Premier League's greatest-ever clubs reignite their rivalry this weekend, with Arsenal hosting bitter enemy Manchester United at the Emirates Stadium in a highly-anticipated showdown. This 11:30 a.m. ET encounter is scheduled for Sunday as both sides enter with a point to prove.

For the hosts, the goal is simple. After drawing 2-2 at home away to 10-man Fulham last weekend, Mikel Arteta's side cannot afford to drop points in consecutive games and thus have to win on Sunday.

The Gunners conceded against the Cottagers inside the first 60 seconds of the game, which is the third time this has happened at the Emirates Stadium in 2023. A poor backpass from Bukayo Saka saw the North London side go down 1-0 inside the first minute but the English giants did come back.

Goals from the aforementioned Saka and Eddie Nketiah, who has been called up to the English national team for the upcoming international break, saw Arsenal pull ahead but poor defending on a late corner saw the home side concede once more and draw 2-2 against a team with a one-man disadvantage.

And this was not the first time Arsenal struggled to hit top form. While last season's runners-up won their first two games of the season, Saka and Co. were lackluster in attack against Nottingham Forest and Crystal Palace, winning by a mere one-goal advantage on both occasions.

As a result, a number of players, mainly Kai Havertz, and the manager's selections have been criticized by the fans. However, Arteta defended his men in the pre-match press conference. Nonetheless, with the international break looming, Mikel has to find a way to deliver the needed result.

Manchester United, meanwhile, enter this game on the back of a 3-2 win over Nottingham Forest but this result was not without concerns as well.

The Red Devils bounced back from their 2-0 loss at Tottenham on Matchday 2 when they hosted Steve Cooper on Matchday 3. However, the Red Devils found themselves 2-0 down inside the first four minutes.

Fortunately, Ten Hag's men pulled off a comeback, with Eriksen, Casemiro, and Fernandes all getting on the scoresheet to secure a 3-2 victory. However, this just showcased Manchester United's deficiencies in defense and midfield once more.

A lot has changed since that result, it should be noted. Due to key injuries — more on that later — the English giants signed Sergio Reguilón and Sofyan Amrabat on loan to bolster their backline and midfield. Whether they are deemed ready to feature on Sunday is another question.

As a result, Arsenal are not the only ones with a point to prove. Despite beating the Gunners 2-0 during their preseason tour of the USA, Manchester United lost 3-2 in their last trip to the Emirates Stadium and were convincingly outplayed. Rashford and Co. cannot let a repeat occur.

Team news

Arsenal: The Gunners have received a huge blow, with Thomas Partey picking up a groin injury during training and joining Jurrien Timber on the sidelined. The Ghanaian will miss this tie, but while there are rumors of a 3-4 month layoff, the extent of this injury has not yet been determined.

Takehiro Tomiyasu is back from suspension but it remains unclear whether he, Jakub Kiwior, or Oleksandr Zinchenko will start at left-back. Meanwhile, all eyes will be on Kai Havertz and whether the German ace will be dropped due to his lackluster performances so far.

Manchester United: Ten Hag is without Luke Shaw and Raphael Varane, with the Englishman and Frenchman set to be out for a number of weeks. Likewise, Mason Mount and Tyrell Malacia are also on the sidelined.

Rasmus Højlund, however, is fit and could make his debut, though a short cameo off the bench is likely. Meanwhile, Scott McTominay and Jadon Sancho will also miss this tie.

Key stats

  • Arsenal are unbeaten in their last five home games against Manchester United in all competitions.

  • The Gunners will be looking to win three consecutive home league games against their bitter rivals for the first time since 1991, having won the last two times Rashford and Co. visited the Emirates Stadium.

  • The Red Devils have won six of their last seven Premier League games.

  • However, Ten Hag's men boast only three wins from their last 11 away matches, losing six times.

  • Against the traditional big six clubs and Newcastle United, Manchester United have won none of their last 11 away clashes, losing a whopping eight.

  • While their last win came back in 2017, only Liverpool (9) have triumphed in more league games at Arsenal than the Red Devils (8).
