About Parva Liga

The Bulgarian A League, also known as Efbet League due to its sponsor or the Parva Liga, is the top-tier football category in Bulgaria. This league was founded in 1924 whilst its current round-robin format was established in 1948, although some adjustments were made recently.

This competition works under a promotion-relegation system with the Bulgarian Second Division. Each season, two teams are relegated to the lower-tier category, while the champions of the 2nd Division and the winner of a playoff earn the right to play in the Bulgarian top-flight.

The Bulgarian Parva Liga gets to see four of its teams play in European competitions. The winner of the tournament makes it to the preliminary rounds of the UEFA Champions League, while the runners-up are handed a spot in the early stages of the UEFA Europa League. Third and fourth spots are available for that competition, which are handed to the winner of a playoff round and to the Bulgarian Cup winners.

The regular season forces all clubs to play 26 games in a round-robin format. Once those games are over, the six best clubs enter a championship round. The remaining eight teams enter a relegation round, where two groups of four teams will be drawn. The last-placed teams of those groups enter a relegation playoff against the runners-up of the Second Division, where three teams are allowed to keep their spot in the Bulgarian A League.

The Bulgarian Parva Liga's most decorated teams are CSKA Sofia (record-holders of the most league titles in a row with nine), Levski Sofia, Ludogorets Razgrad and Slavia Sofia.
