About La Liga

La Liga hosts two of the biggest clubs in the world: eternal rivals and European heavyweights Barcelona and Real Madrid. Founded in 1929, the competition ranks among Europe’s top-five leagues for the prestigious reputation it has attained over the years. The league is contested among 20 clubs and functions under the double round-robin format where each team plays each other twice in a season. At the end of the season, the team with the most points is crowned as champions. Operating on a relegation and promotion system with the Segunda Division, three teams are relegated from La Liga at the end of every season. They are replaced by three new teams promoted from the first division league. In Europe, La Liga can get up to seven spots to compete in the two continental championships each season. The top-four sides enter UEFA’s elite club competition, the Champions League, whereas the teams that occupy fifth and sixth compete in the Europa League. Spain’s primary cup competition, Copa Del Rey, offers another outlet for Europa League football. However, that is only possible if the competition is won by a team that has already secured a European berth via La Liga. In that case, the spot goes to the league’s seventh-placed side. The marketability and appeal epitomized by La Liga cannot be understated as, over the years, it has been home to some of the finest football talents ever seen. In the mid-20th century, Real Madrid’s dominant side consisting of Alfredo Di Stéfano and Ferenc Puskás. Di Stéfano, Puskás, Raymond Kopa, and Francisco Gento were crucial in the quest to make the league renowned globally. This will not be fully ascertained without an honorable mention of Barcelona’s ‘Dream Team’ under Johan Cruyff. International stars Romario, Michael Laudrup, Hristo Stoichkov, and Ronald Koeman, as well as La Masia, graduates Pep Guardiola, Albert Ferrer, and Guillermo Amor, all made the period worthwhile. The 90s and early 2000s offered us new challengers and world-class footballers for Real Madrid in Raúl, Casillas, Ronaldo, Roberto Carlos, Figo, Beckham, Zidane, while Barcelona also had their crop of superstars in Luis Enrique, Rivaldo, Romario, Ronaldinho, Samuel E’too, Xavi, Iniesta, Puyol. All in all, the era characterized by the duopoly Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, sets unrivaled precedence that will linger for generations.

Did you know? Lionel Messi owns practically all goalscoring records in La Liga, including most goals scored, goals scored in a single season (50) and most goals scored in a calendar year (59).
