About US Open Cup
The US Open Cup is a knock-out cup competition for men's soccer clubs in America. Founded in 1914 and originally known as the National Challenge Cup, it is the oldest ongoing national soccer tournament in the United States. The competition adopted its commonly known title "Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup" in 1999 when it was renamed and dedicated to the principal founder of the MLS, Lamar Hunt.
The single-elimination tournament has been contested by at least 80 teams since the 2014 edition. The participating clubs are from the Major League Soccer (MLS), the USL Championship, the USL League One, and the National Independent Soccer Association (NISA), as well as the amateur leagues.
The preliminary stage (the first three rounds) features clubs from the amateur and lower-leagues in a one-legged tie. The winning teams then advance to face USL clubs in geographical pairings in the second round. The winner of each fixture secures qualification to the next round and the loser is eliminated from the tournament.
Clubs from the MLS enter the US Open Cup in the fourth round and are matched with winners of the third round in the same geographical area. The winners of the fourth round progress to the quarter-final round. This is followed by a semi-final and a final match to determine the ultimate champion. All extra-time and penalty shoot-out rules apply for all the matches.
The eventual winners of the US Open Cup qualify for the group stage of the CONCACAF Champions League.
