About Ligue 1
Ligue 1 is France's top football league. The competition is made up of 20 teams. As is the case with Europe's premier domestic competitions, Ligue 1 is also based on a relegation-promotion system, with the three top-placed sides from Ligue 2 moving up each season to replace the three lowest-placed clubs from the top-flight.
Founded in 1932, the competition initially began under the name "National" before switching to "Division 1" a year into its formation. Things remained as such until 2002 when the tournament adopted its current name. The inaugural title was won by Olympique Lillois, a team that merged with SC Fives in 1944 to form Lille OSC.
The league offers Champions League tickets to the three top-placed teams each season. The sides that finish in fourth and fifth enter the Europa League. Additionally, if the Coupe de France and Coupe de la Ligue are won by clubs that have already secured European berths via the league, then the teams that finish in sixth and seventh will also enter the UEL.
Some of the country's biggest clubs include Marseille, PSG, Olympique Lyonnais, and Lille, but its landscape changed when Neymar joined Les Parisiens in the summer of 2017. That high-profile move broke the then transfer record fee, as Les Parisiens paid Barcelona over $250M for the Brazilian. However, the Selecao ace isn’t the only talented player to have graced Ligue 1, both past and present.
The French top-flight has produced and witnessed some of the most talented names in the history of the beautiful game. Raymond Kopa, Michel Platini, George Weah, Ronaldinho, Zinedine Zidane, Thierry Henry, Didier Drogba, Juninho, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Edinson Cavani, and Kylian Mbappe are just a few players who either rose to prominence or enjoyed tremendous spells in France.
As a result, the French top-flight ranks among Europe’s top-five leagues. It boasts impressive viewership numbers and enjoys popularity among football lovers who, in turn, passionately follow the action each season via TV broadcasters, live streaming options, and on-demand services.
