This week will have plenty of games to follow in women's football, including in Germany, Spain, and Italy.

Italy’s Serie A is the country’s premier football league. Twenty teams play 38 matches each season, with the winner being awarded the Scudetto. The competition was founded in 1898 and has been functioning under the current double round-robin format since 1929-30.

Each season, three new teams are promoted from the Serie B league to the Italian top-flight. They replace the three lowest-ranked clubs from the previous Serie A season that were subsequently relegated to the second division.

The Italian top-flight can award up to seven European spots each season. The top-four sides enter UEFA’s premier club competition, the Champions League. The teams that finish in fifth and sixth drop into the Europa League. Coppa Italia, Italy’s primary cup competition, offers an additional Europa League slot but if that competition is won by a team that has already secured a European berth via Serie A, then that spot goes to the league’s seventh-placed side.

This competition is one of the most popular leagues in not only Europe but the entire world. The reasons are obvious: Italy boasts some of the biggest clubs in football, with the likes of Juventus, AC Milan, and Inter Milan enjoying tremendous success both domestically and in Europe.

On top of that, some of the greatest names in the history of the beautiful game have plied their trade in Italy’s top-flight. Gianluigi Buffon, Paolo Maldini, Andrea Pirlo, and the Brazilian Ronaldo – regarded as some of the finest players in their respective positions – have all graced this league. Serie A has also produced several Ballon d’Or winners, with the likes of Kaka, Pavel Nedved, Ruud Gullit, Marco Van Basten, and George Weah – the Liberian icon was the first African player to lift this prize – all winning the France Football honor during their time in Italy.

The transfer of Cristiano Ronaldo, regarded by many as the greatest footballer of all time, from Real Madrid to Juventus in the summer of 2018 brought additional glitz and glamour to one of Europe’s biggest leagues. As a result, TV broadcasters, live streaming options, and on-demand services rack in impressive viewership from football fans craving only the best of the best.
