About DFL-Supercup
The DFL Super Cup, or German Super Cup, is an annual football tournament organized by the German Football League System. The tournament is considered by fans and experts as the kickoff to every football season in Germany, with the Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal winners fighting for the award.
The tournament was played for the first time in 1987, but after ten seasons, DFB execs decided to change the format of the competition into a six-team tournament, called the DFL Ligapokal. In 2008, a crowded schedule forced the DFB to suspend the competition, and one year later, the DFL Ligapokal was officially canceled. The DFL Super-Cup has been played from that year on without any complications under its current format.
Contrary to what happens in other countries, the DFL Super-Cup is played either at the stadium of the DFB Pokal winners or at the stadium where the Bundesliga runners-up play. This decision was made so the Bundesliga champions are not as comfortable as in other countries, promoting competitivity. Seven teams have been able to claim the award in all 20 DFL-Super-Cup editions.
The 2019 DFL Super-Cup was held at Signal Iduna Park, in Dortmund. There, the hosts defeated Bundesliga champions Bayern München with a 2-0 score, ending Die Roten’s three-year dominance in this competition. This was Borussia Dortmund’s sixth title in this competition, with four of those coming for the yellow and black side while playing as DFB-Pokal champions.
Did you know? Robert Lewandowski is the tournament’s all-time top scorer with five goals, following his antics for both Borussia Dortmund and Bayern München.
