About UEFA Super Cup

The UEFA Super Cup was created in 1971 after the suggestion of a journalist named Anton Witkamp, who urged UEFA to create a tournament where the winners of the two top club competitions in Europe (the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Europa League) lock horns against each other. After a first try that was -- and is still -- not recognized officially by UEFA, the first edition of the tournament took place in 1973 under a two-legged format. The UEFA Super Cup is considered by fans and experts as the kick-off to every season in European football since it takes place in July or August before most leagues have even started.

The original two-legged format for this competition was dropped in 1997 when UEFA decided that the UEFA Super Cup should be played at a neutral venue. From 1998 to 2012, the UEFA Super Cup was played at Stade Louis II in Monaco, but UEFA chose to rotate the venue after the 2012 edition in order to give fans from other European nations a chance to watch their favorite players performing live.

There were only three years in which UEFA decided not to play the tournament. In 1974, Bayern and Magdeburg did not reach an agreement on the venues where the games were to take place. Then, Liverpool could not fit the match in their agenda back in 1981, causing the clash’s suspension. The tournament was suspended for the last time in 1985 when the ban against English clubs prevented the tie between Everton and Juventus from taking place.

The match is staged at a neutral venue. The decision to hold the UEFA Super Cup in different stadiums each year, similar to the Champions League and Europa League finals, came into effect in 2013 after the competition was contested at Stade Louis II for 15 consecutive editions from 1998 to 2012.

This fixture is your average 90-minute football game, with two additional 15-minute periods being added and – if necessary – penalty shootouts taking place if the score remains level. As mentioned above, this tournament is viewed as the curtain-raiser to European football and, as a result, it enjoys tremendous popularity among fans. This is reflected in the viewership as football lovers tune in to TV broadcasts, live streaming options, and on-demand services each year to watch the two champions of Europe battle it out.
